Never Lost to Each Other

Bhagavad Gita 6.30

Meaning · English

One who sees me everywhere, and sees everything in me: for that person I am never lost, and that person is never lost to me.

Three words carry it. Paśyati is "sees", and in the Gita it means steady perceiving, not a passing glance. Sarvatra is "everywhere", in every place and every thing. Praṇaśyati is "is lost", the sense of something vanishing or slipping out of reach. Krishna tells Arjuna that the person who sees him in everything, and everything held within him, is never lost to him, and he is never lost to that person. The verse has two halves and Krishna gives both. The seer finds him in each thing met, and also finds each thing resting in him. The reason is the problem of separation. Anything we hold apart from God can be lost, and so can the sense of God. Here the gap is gone, so there is nothing to lose. What it asks of Arjuna is a way of looking, held steadily, not a belief. The commentators read the promise differently. Shankara takes it as the seer knowing his own self to be one with the Lord. Ramanuja takes it as devotion, in which the Lord holds the devotee as dear as the devotee holds him. Madhva takes it as seeing the Lord as supreme and present in all, who in return guards the seer.

A lamp stands in a dark room. Every chair, cup and face shows only by its light, and the lamp is never out of sight because it is what lets anything be seen. Seeing Krishna everywhere is like this: he is the light every thing is seen by, so he cannot go missing.

1. Pick one ordinary hour today, such as the walk to the shop or the washing-up, and for those minutes treat every person and object you meet as held in God's presence. 2. When you notice you have forgotten, stop for one breath and begin again without scolding yourself. 3. At night, recall one moment when the thought stayed with you. Note what that moment felt like.

A mother stands on a railway platform as her son's train pulls out for a job in a far city. The first feeling is loss: the window shrinks, the face goes, and she is left holding his empty bag. Krishna's teaching asks for a different looking. She sees him in the faces of other travellers on the platform, in the tea seller's kindness, in the road the train runs on, and all of it, son included, resting in the one she calls God. The text promises that for such a seer the bond is not broken, because it never ran through the train window. Ordinary experience agrees that what we attend to feels near and what we stop attending to feels gone. The verse does not promise that the ache of parting disappears, that the platform stops being hard, or that a worried parent needs no phone call. It speaks of a bond that cannot be lost, not of comfort on the day.
