Devotion is one, yet it takes eleven forms: attachment to God's glorious qualities, to his beauty, to worship, to remembrance, to service as his servant, to friendship with him, to parental love for him, to love as for a beloved, to giving oneself wholly to him, to being absorbed in him, and to the pain of utter separation from him. So say the teachers of devotion, unafraid of what people gossip, all of one mind: Kumara, Vyasa, Shuka, Shandilya, Garga, Vishnu, Kaundinya, Shesha, Uddhava, Aruni, Bali, Hanuman, Vibhishana, and others.
Two words carry the sutra. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. Asakti means attachment, a clinging, from a root meaning to stick. Narada uses the second word eleven times, and each time the sticking is to God, not to the world. The list runs from the nearest and gentlest to the most burning. A person may cling to God's qualities, his beauty, worship, remembering, serving as a servant, friendship, parental tenderness, the love of a beloved, complete self-offering, absorption, and last the ache of separation. Narada says bhakti is one thing that appears in eleven ways. He does not rank them or say a seeker must pass through all of them. Then he names the bhaktacharyas, the teachers of devotion, and says they speak with one mind. Kumara, Vyasa, Shuka, Hanuman, Vibhishana and the rest each knew a different taste of love. They also did not fear janajalpa, the talk of people. Their agreement matters because the sutras just before this put devotion above every other path. A reader might then ask whether devotion has one required shape. Narada answers that it has many shapes and one heart. He asks the listener to look for their own natural way of loving, and not to measure it against another person's.
A mother's single love shows up as cooking at dawn, scolding at the door, humming at bedtime, and waiting up at night. Nobody thinks she has four loves. One love takes the shape each hour needs, as devotion takes the shape each heart is able to hold.
1. Tonight, sit for two minutes and ask which of the eleven ways is already yours: admiring, serving, remembering, befriending, or something else. 2. Name it in one plain sentence, such as "I remember him when I cook." 3. This week, give that one way ten quiet minutes each day, at the same time and place. 4. When you hear someone else's way of devotion described, notice any urge to compare, and let it pass without a verdict.
A young mother sits at the back of a long evening prayer, restless, watching her sister beside her weep openly during the singing. She decides she must be doing devotion wrongly. Narada's list answers her in steps. First, it says love for God comes in eleven forms, and weeping in song is only one of them. Second, it names teachers as different as Hanuman the servant and Vyasa the compiler, and says they agree. So she can ask what her own attachment looks like. Perhaps she finds it in remembering God while she packs lunches, or in the quiet pleasure of a single verse. Third, it says the teachers did not fear what people said. That frees her from her aunt's sideways glance. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: people love their parents, friends and children in different ways, and no one calls the quieter ways false. The sutra does not promise she will feel what her sister feels, nor does it say that comparison disappears at once. It also does not treat restlessness, low mood or exhaustion as spiritual matters. Those may need rest, or a doctor's attention.
