Meaning · English
Whoever trusts this auspicious teaching spoken by Narada, and holds it with faith, becomes a devotee. That person reaches the Beloved. That person reaches the Beloved.
Three words carry this closing sutra. Shraddha is faith, the settled trust that makes a person willing to try something before fully proving it. Vishvasiti is trusting without holding back, taking the teacher at his word. Preshtha is the Beloved, the one dearest of all, which for Narada is God. The sutra says that whoever trusts this teaching of Narada, called auspicious because it brings good to whoever follows it, and holds it with faith, becomes a bhaktiman, a person who has bhakti, loving devotion. That person also reaches the Beloved. The last phrase is said twice, the way a book ends with a full stop pressed firmly. Narada does not close with another instruction. He closes with a promise, and he names the one thing that opens it: trust. The sutras before it have said that devotion is greater than the three truths, that it takes eleven forms, and that the old teachers agree. Now the question is how any of this becomes real for the listener. Narada answers that the teaching has to be believed enough to be lived. The sutra asks for neither cleverness nor rank. It asks the listener to take these words as true enough to act on, and to keep holding them.
A stranger points to a worn footpath across a field and says it leads to the village well. You cannot see the well from here. You trust the path, start walking, and the well appears. The path is Narada's teaching, the walking is faith, and the well is the Beloved.
1. Choose one thing from these sutras that you already half believe, such as that love of God can be simple and open to anyone. 2. Today, for five minutes, act as if it were true: say the name of God or sit quietly with love, without arguing with yourself. 3. In the evening, note in one line what trusting it was like. 4. Repeat tomorrow at the same hour.
A young man starts his first day as an electrician's apprentice. The old foreman hands him a short rule: always switch off and test the wire before touching it. The reasons are not explained, and the young man would like them explained first. Following the rule on trust, he tests every wire that day, and by the end of the week the reasons are plain to him from his own work. Trust came first and understanding came after. The sutra asks for the same order. Narada says that whoever holds his teaching with faith becomes a devotee and reaches the Beloved. Faith here is not a pause of thinking. It is a decision to practise long enough to find out. Ordinary experience confirms that many skills are learned this way, from a teacher whose reasons only become clear in use. The sutra does not promise that doubt will never return, that every day of practice will feel warm, or that faith replaces a doctor, a lawyer or a trained teacher where one is needed. What it offers is Narada's own claim that trust opens the way, and it leaves the walking to the listener.
