Meaning · English

Long ago, two asuras, Shumbha and Nishumbha, relying on their pride and strength, took from Indra, lord of Shachi, the three worlds and the gods' shares of the sacrifice. The same two took the sun's office, and likewise the moon's. They took the offices of Kubera, of Yama, and of Varuna. They made themselves the power of the wind and did the work of fire. Of the other gods' offices too, one of them holds them all himself. Then the gods were driven out, robbed of their kingdoms, and defeated.

Medhas is answering a question the king and the merchant have been carrying: why does a person lose what was rightfully theirs? He answers with a story about the gods, who lost theirs too. Take three words one at a time. Asura is a being who opposes the gods. Yajnabhaga is the share of the sacrifice, the portion of each offering that belongs to a god, from yajna, offering, and bhaga, portion. Adhikara is office or rightful charge, from adhi, over, and kri, to do: the work a god is set over, such as the sun's shining or Varuna's waters. Now the clauses. Shumbha and Nishumbha, two brothers, take the three worlds from Indra. They take the gods' shares of the offerings, so the gods lose their food and their standing. Medhas names the cause: they relied on madabala, the strength of their own pride. Then he lists the thefts. The sun's office, the moon's, Kubera's wealth, Yama's judgment, Varuna's waters, the wind's power, and fire's work all pass to the two. The last lines say that one of them, whichever he means, holds every other office himself. The gods are then thrown out, kingless, beaten. Why is this told here? Suratha lost a kingdom and Samadhi lost a family. Medhas shows that even the gods, who hold the world's offices, can be stripped of everything. The loss is not a private shame. He is also setting up what follows: the gods, helpless, will remember the Goddess. The text presents the seizure as the need that calls her. It asks nothing yet of the listener except to hear how complete the loss was.

A neighbourhood has a baker, a well-keeper, a night watchman, each doing one job. A strongman moves in, takes every job and the keys, and the people are turned out of their own street. The offices are the gods' charges, the strongman is the two asuras, and the street is the three worlds.
