Meaning · English
Stripped of their offices, cast out by the two great asuras, all the gods remember the Goddess, the unconquered. She gave us a boon: 'In times of calamity, when you remember me, I will at that very moment destroy your worst disasters.' Having made up their minds, the gods went to Himavat, the lord of mountains. There they praised the Goddess, Vishnu's Maya, with hymns.
Three Sanskrit words carry the verse. Adhikara means an office or rightful charge; the gods were hṛta-adhikāra, robbed of the duties that made them gods. Aparajita means unconquered, from a-parajita, not defeated. Vishnumaya joins Vishnu with maya, the power that makes the world appear and holds beings in it. Medhas tells the king and the merchant what the gods did next. Both asuras have driven them out, and they have no army and no seat. So they remember. Medhas says the Goddess once gave them a boon: whenever they remember her in trouble, she will end their worst calamity at once. The gods hold to that promise. They settle their minds on it, which is what making up one's mind means here, and walk to the Himalaya, called the lord of mountains. There they begin to praise her, naming her Vishnumaya. Why is this taught here? Suratha lost a kingdom and Samadhi lost his family, and both sit in the same ruin the gods are in. Medhas shows them what the gods did at the bottom: not another plan, but turning to the one who had promised help. The Goddess is called unconquered just when the gods have been conquered, and the text lets that contrast stand. The verse asks nothing of the listener directly. It shows the gods' order of action: remember, decide, go, praise. The commentators on the Saptashati, Guptavati among them, read this as the gods turning from their own strength to her, though that reading is offered here only in general terms.
A traveller robbed on the road remembers a friend's standing promise, 'come to me if you are ever in need,' and walks to that house. The gods are the traveller, the boon is the promise, and the Himalaya is the friend's door.
