Meaning · English

Long ago the gods and the asuras fought a war that lasted a full hundred years. Mahisha was the lord of the asuras, and Indra, the breaker of cities, was lord of the gods. In that war the mighty asuras defeated the army of the gods. Having conquered all the gods, the asura Mahisha became Indra.

Medhas begins with a war. Three words carry it. Asura names the gods' rivals, the other family of powerful beings in Indian story. Mahisha means buffalo, so Mahishasura is the buffalo asura. Purandara is a name of Indra, the breaker of cities, and it is a name for the office of king of the gods as much as for one person. The first line gives the scale: a hundred full years, a war that wore everyone down. It sets two lords against each other, Mahisha over the asuras and Indra over the gods. The second line gives the result. The asuras were mighty, and the army of the gods lost. The last line is the sharpest. Mahisha did not only win a battle. He became Indra, taking the seat itself. Medhas tells this to Suratha, a king who lost his kingdom, and to Samadhi, a merchant thrown out by his own family. Both know what it is to lose a place. The story starts by showing that even the rulers of heaven can lose theirs. It sets up the question the rest of the chapter answers: where do the defeated turn? The text does not answer yet.

A man wins a long quarrel against a village headman's side, then sits in the headman's chair and signs papers with the headman's title. The war was only the beginning. The real loss came when the usurper took the seat, as Mahisha takes Indra's.
