Devi Mahatmya 2.3

Meaning · English

Then the defeated gods placed Brahma, the lotus-born lord of creatures, at their head, and went to the place where Shiva and Vishnu, whose banner is the Garuda bird, were present. They told the two, just as it had happened, all that Mahishasura had done, and the full story of how the gods had been overcome.

Three words carry the verse. Parajita means beaten, overcome: the gods arrive as losers. Puraskritya means setting someone in front, giving them the lead. Yathavrittam means just as it happened, in the order it happened. The sage Medhas tells it this way. The gods have lost heaven to Mahishasura and do not know what to do. They do not storm back. They place Brahma, called lotus-born because the old tales say he rose from a lotus, in front of them, and walk to where Shiva and Vishnu are. Vishnu is named by his banner, the Garuda bird, so the listener can picture him. Then comes the second half. The gods tell the two everything, plainly and in sequence, with nothing softened and nothing blamed on others. They give the full account of how they were crushed. Why does Medhas dwell on this? King Suratha has lost a kingdom and the merchant Samadhi has lost his family. Both are asking what to do with loss they cannot fix alone. The story answers by showing even the gods in that place. They stop acting alone, go to those who can help, and say the truth first. The verse asks nothing of the listener directly. It shows what the defeated did before any help came.

A man whose shop has been taken over by a bully does not go in alone again. He gathers the elders of the street, walks to the people who can settle it, and lays out every detail in order. The gods' walk and their honest telling are that gathering and that account.
