Meaning · English

The sun, Indra, fire, wind and moon, Yama and Varuna, and the other gods besides: he takes over the office of each and sits in their place himself. All the hosts of the gods, thrown out of heaven by that wicked-minded buffalo, wander the earth like ordinary mortals. All this, the doings of the gods' enemy, has been told to you. We have come to you for refuge. Let his killing be thought out.

Three words carry the verse. Adhikara means an office or charge, a duty handed to someone: the sun gives light, fire burns, Yama judges, Varuna holds the waters. Martya means mortal, one who must die. Sharana means refuge, a place to run to when nothing else is left. Prapanna, here in the gods' words, means having arrived at it. Now the clauses. Medhas retells how the gods speak to Vishnu and Shiva. They say Mahisha has not only won the war. He has taken over the work of the sun, Indra, fire, wind, moon, Yama, Varuna and the rest, and he runs those offices himself. Then the gods describe their own state. Driven out of heaven, they roam the earth like mortals, with no place and no duty. They call him duratma, wicked-minded. They close by saying they have told everything, they have come for refuge, and they ask the two to consider how he may be killed. Why is this taught here? Suratha has lost a kingdom and Samadhi a home. Medhas shows that even gods can lose their seat, and that the one who takes it is not always the one fit to hold it. The gods do not fight on alone. They state the facts plainly and ask for shelter. The verse asks the listener to see that this is how the story turns: honest telling and taking refuge come before the Goddess appears.

A town's well-keepers, the lamplighter, the bell-ringer, the gatekeeper, are pushed out by a bully who now does every job badly himself. They stand in the road like strangers, then go to the elders. The gods are those keepers, and the elders are Vishnu and Shiva.
