Meaning · English
Hearing the gods speak in this way, Vishnu, the slayer of Madhu, grew angry, and Shiva too, his face twisted with a frown of knitted brows. Then from the face of Vishnu, bearer of the discus, who was filled with fury, a great radiance went forth, and a great radiance from Brahma and from Shiva as well. And from the bodies of the other gods also, Indra and the rest, a very great radiance came out, and it all gathered into one.
Three words carry this passage. Kopa is anger, from a root meaning to boil or stir. Tejas is radiance, the fire and strength of a being, from a root meaning sharp or blazing. Aikya is oneness, a coming together into a single whole. The clauses go in order. The gods have just finished telling their trouble: Mahishasura has taken their offices and driven them from heaven. Vishnu and Shiva hear it and grow angry. Their brows knit and their faces twist. Then the anger leaves them as light. It comes from Vishnu's face, from Brahma, from Shiva, and then from Indra and all the other gods. Every one of them gives out the same kind of blaze, and the lights run together into one. Why is this taught here? The gods came asking how the buffalo demon could be killed. Medhas answers that no single god is the remedy. Each was beaten alone, and each now gives up what is strongest in him. The text presents the anger as something that works. It does not lie around as a grievance. It becomes light, and the light becomes the means of rescue. For the two listeners, a ruined king and a cast-out merchant, there is a quiet point. Medhas shows a power that arises when many separate strengths are joined and no one holds back. The text does not say what the radiance becomes. It stops at the gathering, and the next verses carry on from there. What it asks of the listener is only to notice the order: grief heard, anger roused, anger turned to light, light made one.
Picture a dozen small lamps carried into a dark hall and set down on one table. Each gave only a little light alone. Together they make a single bright patch that fills the room. The gods' separate radiances, brought together, make one blaze that none of them could have made alone.
