Meaning · English

The gods saw there a vast heap of radiance, like a mountain burning, its flames filling every quarter of the sky. That matchless brilliance had been born from the bodies of all the gods. Gathered into one place, it became a woman, and her light spread through the three worlds.

Three words carry the picture. Tejas is radiance, the shining strength of a being, from a root meaning to be sharp or fiery. Kuta is a heap or peak, a mass piled up. Nari is simply a woman. The gods are the ones watching, and what they see is a mountain of fire standing in the air, flames reaching to the edges of the sky. The text then says where it came from: the light is matchless, and it was born from the bodies of all the gods. None of it is borrowed from outside them. Then it settles in one place, and the heap of fire becomes a woman whose brightness fills the three worlds, meaning heaven, earth and the space between. Why is this taught here? Medhas is answering the king and the merchant, who feel stripped of what was theirs. The gods have been driven from heaven by the buffalo demon Mahishasura, and each had only a scrap of power against him. The Devi Mahatmya's answer is that their scattered strengths, once gathered, take a living form, and that form is the Goddess. Nothing is added from outside. The text presents her as the one force that all their separate powers were part of. Medhas asks the listeners only to notice this: what looked like many small lights was one light all along.

Think of a dozen small lamps carried into a dark hall by a dozen people. Each lights only a patch of floor. Set them all on one table and the whole hall is bright. The gods' separate strengths are the lamps, and the woman is the single light they make together.
