Meaning · English
From the radiance of Shambhu her face came to be. From Yama's radiance came her hair. From the radiance of Vishnu came her many arms. From the moon's radiance came the pair of breasts, and from Indra's the waist. From Varuna's came the calves and thighs, and from the radiance of the earth the hips. From the radiance of Brahma came her feet, and from the sun's radiance the toes of those feet. From the Vasus came the fingers of her hands, and from Kubera her nose.
Medhas is answering a question the king and the merchant carried in with them: who is this Goddess, and where does she come from? His answer is a list, and the list is the teaching. Two words carry it. Tejas is radiance, from a root meaning sharp or bright. It is the gods' own power, what each one is at full strength. Mukha is the face, the part of a person that meets the world and speaks to it. Now the clauses. Shiva's radiance becomes her face. Yama's, the lord of death, becomes her hair. Vishnu's becomes her many arms. The moon gives the breasts, Indra the waist, Varuna the calves and thighs, the earth the hips. Brahma gives the feet, the sun the toes, the Vasus the fingers, Kubera the nose. No part is borrowed or decorative. Every limb is made from the very power of a god. Medhas tells it this way because the gods had come to the end of their own strength against the buffalo demon. No single god could answer him. So the text teaches that she is not one more god added to the list. She is what all their power becomes when it is poured into one body. Each god is in her, and she is more than the sum. What it asks of the listener is attention to how she is made. Suratha has lost a kingdom and Samadhi a family. Medhas shows them a Goddess assembled from every kind of power, and he does it before he tells any battle.
A village once cast a great temple bell from what every household gave: brass pots, anklets, lamp-stands, a plough-tip. No family could have made a bell alone, and no one piece rings by itself. In the same way, the Goddess is shaped from each god's gift, and her voice is the whole of them.
