Meaning · English
Her teeth arose from the radiance of Prajapati. Her three eyes were born from the radiance of fire. Her two brows came from the radiance of the two twilights, and her ears from the radiance of the wind. The radiance of the other gods, too, gave rise to the auspicious one. Then the immortals, tormented by Mahisha, saw her, born from the gathered mass of all the gods' radiance, and they were glad.
Three words carry this passage. Tejas is radiance, from a root meaning to be sharp or to blaze. It is the inner brilliance of a being, and each god has his own. Sandhya is twilight, the joining of day and night, from a root meaning to put together. Muda is gladness, a joy that wells up on its own. Medhas tells the king and the merchant what the Goddess's last features came from. Her teeth come from Prajapati, the lord of creatures. Her three eyes come from fire. Her brows come from the two twilights, morning and evening, and her ears from the wind. The radiance of the remaining gods gives rise to the rest of her, and Medhas calls her auspicious. Each feature takes its quality from the one who gave it. The last two lines turn to the gods. They are the ones Mahisha has been tormenting, and they see her complete, formed from all their radiance together. They rejoice. Medhas is answering the question the two men brought him: who is this Mother, and where does she come from? His answer is that she is not a stranger to the gods. She is what they gave, gathered into one form. The gods' joy is relief at seeing their own scattered strength become a person who can stand against what they could not. The text does not yet tell what she does. It asks the listener only to notice where she comes from.
Picture a village quilt. Every household sends one square, cut from its own cloth, and the finished quilt is spread over neighbours who have been cold all winter. Their gladness is at seeing their own small gifts made into something that can cover them. So the gods rejoice at the Goddess formed from their combined radiance.
