Kapila Teaches His Mother

Bhagavata Purana 3.25

The story · English

Kapila had been born of his own will, by his own power, so that people might come to know the self. The sage Maitreya was telling this to Vidura, who had asked to hear it, and Vidura said that he could never hear enough of such a person. He asked to be told whatever the Lord had done by his own free choice. Maitreya began. Kapila's father had gone off to the forest. Kapila stayed behind, wishing to please his mother, and he lived at Bindusaras. One day he sat there quietly, doing nothing, a guide to the far edge of the truth. His mother, Devahuti, remembered what Brahma had once told her, and she spoke to him.

Devahuti said, "I am worn out with the hunger of the senses. Through it I have fallen into a blind darkness. You have come to me at the end of many lifetimes, a true eye for it. You are the first lord of beings, risen like the sun for a world blinded by darkness. Take away my confusion, the grip of 'I' and 'mine' that you yourself placed on me. I come to you for shelter, the axe that cuts the tree of rebirth. I want to know what nature is, and what the person is." Kapila heard her, honored her wish in his mind, and answered with a faint smile.

He said, "The mind is the cause of bondage and of freedom. Clinging to the qualities of nature binds it. Turned toward the Person, it frees itself. When the mind is cleared of 'I' and 'mine,' of greed and desire, it becomes pure, and sees the self alone, shining by its own light, beyond nature. For the seeker, no road is kinder than devotion to the Lord of all. Keep the company of saints, he told her. They are patient, kind, friends to every creature, and free of enemies. Among them, stories of me delight the heart and ear, and from hearing them, faith, love and devotion come, one after another."

Devahuti asked, "What devotion fits you, and how can I reach it? What is this yoga you have spoken of, and how many parts does it have? Explain it so that a slow-minded woman may understand." Kapila, moved by love for his mother, taught her the Sankhya and the yoga of devotion. He said, "Devotion with no reason behind it, turned toward the Lord, is greater than any perfection. It digests the body's hold the way fire digests what is eaten. Some devotees do not even wish to become one with me. They serve my feet and honor my deeds together, and they see my lovely forms, with calm faces and reddish eyes."

"They do not long for powers or for riches," Kapila said. "Those who hold me as friend, teacher, son and beloved god, who let go of this world and the next and worship me alone, I carry across death. Fear does not leave anyone except through me. The wind blows for fear of me, the sun burns, Indra rains, fire burns, and death walks, all for fear of me. Yogis enter the root of my feet without fear, through devotion joined with knowledge and detachment. This much is the highest good for people: a mind fixed steady on me through intense devotion."
