The story · English
Devahuti, the wife of Kardama, had listened to her son Kapila, and the veil of confusion over her mind fell away. She bowed to him and began to praise him. "You lay in the waters at the end of time," she said, "and Brahma, born from the lotus of your belly, meditated on you. You hold the whole world and shape it by your many powers. And yet you were carried in my womb. How can that be? The one in whose belly this world rested lay alone on a banyan leaf, a child of wonder, sucking his own foot."
She went on. "You took a body, my lord, to calm the sins of the world and to bless those who follow your word. Just as you came as the boar and in other forms, so you have come now, to show the path to the Self. "A person born among dog-eaters is made fit for the sacrifice by hearing your name, speaking it, bowing to you, or even remembering you once. What then of seeing you? Greater is the one whose tongue holds your name. Those who say it have already done the penances and the offerings." She ended: "I bow to you, Kapila, who are Vishnu, the womb of the Vedas."
Kapila, who loved his mother, answered her gently. "Mother, this path I have taught is easy to follow. Walk it, and before long you will reach the highest end. Trust my teaching. The knowers of Brahman have held it dear. Those who do not know it meet death again and again." Having shown her this way, Kapila asked leave to go, and his mother, herself a knower of Brahman, gave it. He left. Devahuti stayed by the Sarasvati, in the same hermitage, and followed the discipline her son had given her.
Her hair grew matted from daily bathing, and her body grew thin in her bark clothing. She had once lived in the splendour of Kardama's house, which even the gods in their flying cars envied: beds white as milk-foam with golden frames, golden seats, soft cushions, walls of clear crystal and great emeralds, jewelled lamps, and women of the household in jewels. Outside lay a garden of flowering trees, with paired birds calling and bees humming, and a pond that smelled of lotuses. She had left all of it. Only her longing for her son troubled her, like a cow that has lost her calf. She turned her mind to Kapila, and soon no house held any pull for her.
She meditated on his smiling face, and through devotion, strong detachment, steady practice and clear knowledge, her mind rested in Brahman. She no longer remembered her body, as a waking person forgets a dream. Her body, though unfed, stayed unwasted, and was dusty, like a fire wrapped in smoke. Her hair loose and her clothes gone, she did not notice, for her mind was in Vasudeva. So by Kapila's path she reached the Supreme. The place became Siddhapada, famed in the three worlds, and her body turned into the best of rivers. Kapila went north-east, honoured by the sea, and sits there in yoga. Those who hear this come to the Lord's feet."
