The story · English
The celestial sage Narada heard a curious thing: that Krishna had rescued sixteen thousand women from the demon Naraka and had married them all. Narada was fascinated. How could one man, with a single body, marry so many wives at the same moment, each in her own house? Driven by this curiosity, he travelled to the city of Dwaraka. He found a city of breathtaking beauty, where gardens were filled with blossoming trees and lakes shimmered with blue, white and red lotuses. Swans and saras cranes called out from the waters, and the streets were lined with palaces made of crystal, silver, and gold, adorned with emeralds and shaded by fluttering banners and flags.
Narada entered the inner apartments, where the architecture showed the full mastery of the divine builder Tvashta. He reached a great palace belonging to one of Krishna's wives, supported by coral pillars, with fine vaidurya panels and sapphire walls. The ceilings were draped with pearl strings, and the rooms were filled with jeweled seats. Maidservants wore gold necklaces and fine clothes, and men wore jackets, turbans and jeweled earrings. Gem lamps drove away the dark, and peacocks danced on the eaves, crying out as they mistook the aguru smoke from the windows for rain clouds. There, Narada saw Krishna's wife, attended by a thousand maidservants equal to her in beauty, youth and dress, fanning him with a gold-handled whisk. Upon seeing the sage, Krishna rose from his couch, bowed his crowned head at the sage's feet and joined his palms in respect.
Though he is the Lord of all, Krishna humbled himself before the sage. He seated him on his own seat, washed his feet and carried that water on his head, then asked, 'Lord, what may we do for you?' 'O Lord,' Narada said, 'it is no wonder that you, lord of all worlds, show friendship to all beings and tame the wicked. I know you have descended to this earth to protect and sustain the universe. I have seen your feet, on which Brahma and others meditate in their hearts, the support that lifts out all who have fallen into the well of worldly existence. Please, grant me your grace so that I may always remember them as I wander.' Having spoken these words, Narada, wishing to understand the Yoga-maya of the lord of yogis, entered the house of another of Krishna's wives.
Narada began to move from house to house, but he encountered a divine mystery. In one home, he found Krishna playing dice with his wife and Uddhava. Krishna rose to honor him as if he had never seen him and asked, 'When did you arrive? What can we do for you?' Narada, amazed, rose and went silently to another house. There he saw him cradling small children. In a third, Krishna was performing a ritual fire sacrifice, and in another, he was feeding Brahmanas. He saw Krishna meditating in silence, practicing swordsmanship with sword and shield, riding elephants and chariots, and consulting with ministers. He saw him playing in the water with the women, gifting cows to priests, listening to the Puranas, and laughing at jokes with his wives. In every single house, Krishna was there, performing different duties simultaneously.
Stunned by this display of Yoga-maya, Narada laughed and told Krishna, 'We know your Yoga-mayas, hard to see even for great mystics; they have become clear to us through serving your feet. Permit me, O God, to wander the worlds singing of your lila, which purifies them.' Krishna replied that he had taken this human form to teach the world how to live a righteous householder's life. 'Son, do not be troubled,' he said. Honored by Krishna, Narada left the city pleased, remembering the Lord alone. Thus, Krishna lived as a man, yet remained the supreme power, filling every home with his presence. And Suka told the king that whoever sings, hears or approves these deeds of Hari gains devotion to the Lord, who is the path to liberation.
