As dawn approached, the roosters began to crow. Krishna's queens, lying with their lord's arm around their necks and pained at the parting to come, cursed the cocks for announcing the dawn. The cool breezes of the Mandara forest blew, carrying the songs of birds. Krishna's dear wife, Vaidarbhi, could not bear that lovely hour, for it drew her out of her beloved's embrace. Then, in the Brahma muhurta, Krishna rose. He touched water to purify himself and meditated on the Supreme Being—the one, eternal, and stainless Light known as Brahman, the cause of all creation and dissolution. He sought to clear his mind of all darkness and align himself with the timeless truth.

After his bath, Krishna dressed in clean garments and performed the Sandhyavandana rituals and the fire sacrifice. He offered prayers to the rising sun and made oblations to the gods, the rishis, his ancestors, the elders, and the learned Brahmins. With a generous heart, he gave to adorned Brahmins, herd after herd every day, gentle milk-rich cows with golden horns, silver-tipped hooves and pearl garlands, each with her calf, along with linen, deerskins and sesame. He honored the cows and their calves, and paid his respects to the elder gurus and all living beings. Finally, he adorned himself with divine garments, jewelry, and fragrant pastes, looking every bit the ornament of the human world as he prepared for the day.

Before leaving, Krishna spent time bringing joy to the citizens and the women of the palace, satisfying their desires with his presence. He handed garlands, betel and sandal paste first to the Brahmins, then to his friends, ministers and wives, and only then used them himself. Soon, a magnificent chariot arrived, pulled by horses like Sugriva. Krishna climbed aboard, joined by Satyaki and Uddhava. As he departed, the women of the palace looked upon him with deep affection, their hearts following him as he left. He entered the Sudharma assembly hall, surrounded by the Vrishnis, and there, among the Yadus, he shone like the moon among the stars.

While Krishna sat upon his throne, entertained by dancers and musicians playing the mridanga and flute, a stranger was admitted into the hall. The man bowed deeply and delivered a heartbreaking message from the twenty thousand kings Jarasandha held captive at Girivraja. 'Krishna,' the messenger said, 'we are terrified and desperate. We are trapped in the clutches of the Magadha king, who treats us like prisoners in a cage. We have heard that you are the protector of the world and the destroyer of the wicked. Please, we beg you to release us from these chains. Again and again you broke him in battle, yet having won against you once, he has grown proud and torments us, your own subjects. Save us from this misery.'

Suddenly, the radiant sage Narada appeared, his orange hair piled high. Krishna rose from his throne with joy to greet him. Narada told Krishna that the Pandavas intended to perform a Rajasuya sacrifice and desired his presence there. He spoke of how the gods and other kings wished to see Krishna at this great event. But Krishna's own Yadu followers, eager to conquer Jarasandha, would not accept this. Krishna smiled and turned to his confidant, Uddhava. He spoke to him in charming words, 'You are my closest friend and understand the depths of my plans. Tell me now, what is the best way for us to proceed?' Krishna knew everything, yet he asked as if he did not; Uddhava took the command on his head and began to answer.
