The story · English

Listening to the divine sage, the wise Uddhava spoke to the assembly. He told Krishna that the sage's advice was correct: he must help Yudhishthira, his father's sister's son, perform his sacrifice, and protect those who sought refuge. Uddhava argued that the Rajasuya required a king who had conquered every direction, so defeating Jarasandha would serve both aims: the sacrifice and the freeing of the captive kings. It would also bring the Yadus great benefit and Krishna great fame. He warned that Jarasandha was a formidable king, possessing the strength of ten thousand elephants, and could only be overcome with the help of Bhima. Since Jarasandha was devoted to Brahmanes and never refused a Brahmane who asked, Uddhava suggested that Bhima should go to the king disguised as a Brahmane and ask him for a duel. There, in Krishna's presence, Bhima would surely kill Jarasandha in single combat.

The assembly, including the divine sage and the elders of the Yadu clan, praised Uddhava's words. Krishna then gave orders for the journey. He instructed his servants, including Daruka, and paid his respects to his teachers. He sent out his queens with their sons and belongings. After taking leave of Sankarshana and Ugrasena, the Yadu king, Krishna climbed into his chariot, which bore the banner of the Garuda. He set out surrounded by a formidable army of elephants and cavalry. The air was filled with the thunderous sound of mridanga drums, horns, and conches. His wives and children followed in golden palanquins, accompanied by guards carrying swords and shields, while servants brought blankets, clothes and tents loaded on camels, bullocks, buffaloes, donkeys, mules and carts.

The army was a magnificent sight, with great flags, umbrellas, and warriors in shimmering armor and crowns; it looked like a surging ocean under the sun. Before departing, the sage bowed to Krishna and held him in his heart. Krishna spoke to the royal messenger, pleasing him with his words: 'Go, and do not fear. I shall ensure the destruction of the Magadha king.' The messenger departed and delivered the message to the kings Jarasandha held captive, who longed for release and to see the hero. Krishna's journey was long; he crossed the lands of the Anarta and Sauvira, navigated through mountains and rivers, and passed through various towns and villages. He crossed the Drishadvati and Sarasvati rivers before finally arriving at Shakraprastha.

Ajatashatru Yudhishthira came out with his preceptors, surrounded by friends, and welcomed Krishna with great joy. The arrival was celebrated with the loud sounds of music and Vedic chants. When the Pandavas saw Krishna, they were overcome with emotion. Yudhishthira, his eyes filling with tears, embraced Krishna, forgetting the chaos of the world. Bhima, the Nakula and Sahadeva twins, and Arjuna also embraced their cousin, their maternal uncle's son, with deep affection. Krishna bowed to the Brahmanes and elders and honored the Kurus, Srinjayas and Kaikayas. The court singers, sutas, magadhas, gandharvas and bards, and the Brahmanes sang praises to the lotus-eyed Lord and danced in celebration. Amidst this warmth, Krishna entered the decorated city, where the streets were scented with the fragrance of elephants and adorned with golden arches and pots of water.

The women of the city rushed from their homes, leaving their chores behind, to catch a glimpse of the visitor. They showered him with flowers from their rooftops. Krishna entered the royal palace, where Kunti rose from her couch to embrace her nephew. Krishna bowed to her and to the elders' wives, and was greeted by Draupadi and his sister Subhadra. Then Draupadi, urged by her mother-in-law Kunti, honored Krishna's wives, Rukmini, Satya, Bhadra, Jambavati, Kalindi, Mitravinda, Shaibya and Nagnajiti, with clothes, garlands and ornaments. Dharmaraja provided a comfortable stay for Krishna and his vast entourage. With Arjuna, Krishna fed the Khandava forest to Agni and saved Maya, who then built the king's divine assembly hall. Krishna spent several months there, enjoying the company of Arjuna and the warriors, and riding in his chariot through the city, bringing joy to the king.
