The story · English
Yudhisthira sat in the center of the assembly, surrounded by sages, Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and his own brothers. With the elders and family friends listening, Yudhisthira addressed Krishna, asking him to help them perform the Rajasuya sacrifice. He spoke of how those who meditate on Krishna's lotus feet find liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Yudhisthira urged the Lord to show the world the power of serving him, and the difference between those who worship him and those who do not. He added that though Krishna looked upon all beings with an equal eye, his grace was like a wish-fulfilling tree: what each received matched the service given.
Krishna replied that Yudhisthira's resolve was noble and would bring him lasting fame. He told the king that the Rajasuya is the desire of all beings—the gods, the ancestors, and the sages. To achieve it, Yudhisthira had to conquer all the other kings and bring the world under his control, gathering all the necessary tributes. Krishna pointed to Yudhisthira's brothers, noting that they were born of the guardians of the directions. He added that he himself, whom the undisciplined cannot conquer, had been conquered by Yudhisthira's self-mastery, and that in this world no one—not even a god, let alone a king—could overcome one devoted to Krishna in splendour, fame or fortune.
Filled with joy, Yudhisthira dispatched his brothers to conquer the four corners of the earth. Sahadeva was sent to the south, Nakula to the west, Arjuna to the north, and Bhima to the east, accompanied by the Madrakas and the Kekayas. They swept through the lands with great energy, defeating the kings and securing vast wealth for Yudhisthira. However, the most formidable challenge remained: the king Jarasandha. To deal with him, Krishna, Bhima, and Arjuna disguised themselves as Brahmins, wearing the brahmin-linga, and went to Girivraja, where the king of Magadha resided. At the hour for receiving guests they came to Jarasandha's own house and made their request to him, the householder, directly.
The visitors asked Jarasandha for whatever they desired, recalling Harishchandra, Rantideva, Shibi, Bali, and a hunter and a pigeon, who gained lasting fame by giving up what perishes. From their voices, build and bowstring-scarred forearms, Jarasandha knew them for Kshatriyas, yet, remembering Bali, who gave the earth to Vishnu disguised as a Brahmin, he resolved to give. He told the visitors, 'Ask for whatever you wish; I would give you my own head.' Krishna spoke clearly: 'We have not come for alms, O King. We have come for a duel. Here are Bhima and Arjuna, and I am Krishna, their cousin and your enemy.' Jarasandha laughed in contempt, mocking Krishna for having fled Mathura to seek refuge by the sea, and challenged Bhima to a fight.
For twenty-seven days, Bhima and Jarasandha fought with massive maces, their blows sounding like thunderbolts. Neither could gain the upper hand until Bhima admitted his struggle to Krishna. Remembering how Jarasandha was born and how he could die, Krishna strengthened Bhima with his own energy and signaled him by mimicking the action of splitting a branch. Understanding the sign, Bhima gripped Jarasandha's legs and tore him apart like a great elephant splitting a branch. The people saw two halves, each with one leg, one arm, one eye and one ear. As a great cry arose, Krishna and Arjuna embraced and honored Bhima. Krishna crowned Sahadeva, Jarasandha's son, king of Magadha and freed the kings Jarasandha had imprisoned.
