The Liberation of the Kings

The story · English
Out of the mountain-valley fortress where Jarasandha had imprisoned them came twenty thousand eight hundred kings in misery. They had been defeated in battle and held captive, their clothes soiled and their faces withered from hunger and thirst. As they came out, they beheld a sight that broke their despair: Krishna standing before them. He was the color of a dark rain-cloud, dressed in yellow silk, wearing a crown and a forest garland. His four arms held a lotus, a mace, a conch, and a disc. The kings were so overwhelmed by his beauty—his reddish eyes and the shimmering fish-shaped earrings—that they fell at his feet, as if drinking him in with their eyes and smelling him with their breath, their long suffering forgotten in an instant.
With folded hands, the kings prayed to Krishna, the remover of distress. 'Save us, Krishna, from this terrible cycle of existence,' they pleaded. They told him they no longer felt any jealousy toward the King of Magadha, for it was by Krishna's own grace that they had lost their kingdoms; indeed, they realized that any king who is blinded by the pride of power gains no true benefit. They admitted they had once been arrogant and cruel, ignoring the reality of death and fighting one another while harming their own subjects. They confessed that Time, Krishna's own form, had stripped them of their fortunes, and that by his mercy their pride had been shattered, so that they finally remembered the sanctuary of his lotus feet.
The kings asked Krishna for a way to remain devoted to him even as they continued through the cycles of birth and death. In response to their prayers, the compassionate Lord spoke in a gentle voice. 'From this day forward,' Krishna told them, 'your devotion to me, the Supreme Lord, shall become firm.' He warned them that wealth and power are intoxicants that drive men mad, citing how great rulers like Haihaya, Nahusha, Vena, Ravana, and Naraka fell from their positions because of such pride. He instructed the kings to protect their citizens with righteousness, to accept both joy and sorrow with equanimity, and to fix their minds on him, so that in the end they would attain him, who is Brahman.
Once the kings were freed from their bonds, Krishna ensured they were restored with dignity. He arranged for them to be bathed and groomed by attendants. He had Sahadeva, Jarasandha's son, honor them with royal garments and ornaments, fragrant sandalwood paste and garlands, and they were served a feast of the finest foods and betel leaves. Honored thus by Mukunda, the kings, released from their great affliction, shone like planets at the end of the rainy season. Krishna then provided them with golden chariots drawn by swift horses and, after speaking comforting words to them, sent them safely back to their own kingdoms, their hearts filled with gratitude for the Lord of the Universe.
After the liberation of the kings and the fall of Jarasandha at the hands of Bhimasena, Krishna set out with Bhima and Arjuna, honored by Sahadeva, Jarasandha's son. They traveled to Khandavaprastha, blowing their conchs to signal their victory, bringing joy to their friends and alarm to their enemies. In Indraprastha, the residents were delighted to hear the news, taking it that the King of Magadha had been put to rest and that King Yudhishthira's wish had been fulfilled. Bhima, Arjuna, and Janardana bowed to the king and recounted everything they had done. When Dharmaraja heard how Krishna had acted out of compassion, he was so moved that he wept tears of joy, unable to find words to express his love.
