King Yudhishthira listened with great joy to the account of how Krishna had killed Jarasandha, and he spoke to Krishna. He said that the great lords of the three worlds carry Krishna's command on their heads, yet Krishna accepts orders from lowly men, like Yudhishthira himself, who think themselves lords, and that is only His play. He added that the radiance of the Supreme Brahman does not increase or diminish through action, any more than the sun changes its light. Neither Krishna nor His devotees, he said, think in terms of 'mine' and 'thine'; such divided thinking belongs to animals. When the time for the sacrifice came, Yudhishthira, with Krishna's approval, chose the priests.
The assembly was magnificent. Priests like Dvaipayana, Bharadvaja, and Vasishtha gathered, alongside figures such as Bhishma, Drona, and Vidura. People from all four castes—Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras—and kings from every land attended. The Brahmins ploughed the sacrificial ground with golden ploughs and initiated the king as scripture prescribed; all the implements were of gold, as in Varuna's sacrifice of old. The gathering was a celestial tapestry; beside the royal families stood the Lokapalas, Brahma, Siddhas, Gandharvas, Yakshas, and even the Nagas. Amidst this divine splendor, the priests performed the Rajasuya for the son of Pandu properly, as the gods had once performed it for Varuna.
As the time came to honor the most worthy guest, Sahadeva spoke up. He argued that Krishna, the Lord of the Satvatas, deserved the highest honor because He is the essence of the entire universe. Sahadeva explained that the gods, the elements, the mantras, and the paths of Sankhya and Yoga are all manifestations of one single, non-dual reality. 'Therefore,' Sahadeva declared, 'let the supreme honor be given to the great Krishna.' The assembly agreed, and Yudhishthira, filled with love, washed Krishna's feet and, with his wife, brothers, ministers and family, joyfully carried that water on his head. He then offered Krishna yellow silk robes and precious ornaments, his eyes brimming with tears of devotion.
But Shishupala, the son of Damaghosha, rose from his seat in a rage. Telling the assembly, the best judges of worth, not to heed young Sahadeva's words, he shouted insults at Krishna, calling him a mere cowherd and a disgrace to his lineage. 'How can a man who has abandoned all Dharma, a man from a cursed lineage who lives by the sea like a pirate, be honored above the great sages and priests?' he screamed. Krishna remained silent, as a lion ignores a jackal's howl. However, the members of the assembly could not bear it; covering their ears, they walked out cursing Shishupala, for whoever stays to hear the Lord reviled falls from his merit. The Pandavas, enraged, drew their weapons to kill him. Unafraid, Shishupala took up sword and shield and abused the kings on Krishna's side.
As Shishupala charged, Krishna rose, held back His own men, and in anger severed Shishupala's head with the razor-sharp Sudarshana Chakra. A great uproar arose, and the kings who followed Shishupala fled to save their lives. The light from Shishupala's body merged into Krishna, like a meteor falling from the sky to earth; enmity through three births had kept his mind fixed on Krishna, and so he became one with Him. Yudhishthira gave generous gifts to the priests and performed the Avabhrita bath. Krishna stayed for a few months before returning to his own city with his family. After that bath Yudhishthira had shone like Indra; the guests departed praising Krishna and the sacrifice, and only the sinful Duryodhana could not bear the Pandavas' prosperity. Those who tell this story are freed from all sins.
