The story · English
The air was filled with joy as gods and men gathered for the Rajasuya sacrifice. King Yudhishthira was surrounded by his devoted kin who tended to him with deep affection. Bhima ran the kitchen, Duryodhana kept the treasury, Arjuna served the elders and Krishna washed the guests' feet. Sahadeva managed the rituals of worship, Nakula organized the precious materials, the daughter of Drupad looked after the serving of guests, and the generous Karna gave the gifts. The sons of Bahlika, along with Santardana and others, worked tirelessly to please the king. The celebration reached a peak during the Avabhrita bath in the celestial river, where the sounds of diverse instruments filled the air. The sound of vina, flute and clapping hands rose until it touched the very heavens.
The kings, in golden necklaces, went out in procession to the bath with their finely adorned soldiers, the sacrificer at their head, their armies shaking the earth as they marched. Above them, celestial sages, Pitris, and Gandharvas rained flowers upon the assembly, while others showered them with various fragrant essences. The women, smiling and radiant, moved through the crowds, their laughter and graceful movements unsettling those with narrow minds. The king himself shone among his wives as the king of sacrifices shines with its rites. After he had sipped water, the priests bathed him in the Ganga together with Draupadi, while the heavenly beings and humans continued to shower them with blossoms. Then people of every varna and ashrama bathed there too, in waters that free even a great sinner of his sin at once.
Yudhishthira, whose heart was focused on Narayana, showed immense respect to the priests and the learned members of the sacrifice, honoring them with fine clothes and ornaments. All the people were splendidly dressed, and the women shone in golden belts and sparkling jewelry. The brahmanas, kshatriyas, vaishyas and shudras, and the kings who had come, were all honored, and after receiving the king's leave they began to return to their own realms, yet they did so with reluctance. They praised the magnificence of the event and could never have enough of it, like a mortal drinking nectar. Yudhishthira, dreading the parting, lovingly held Krishna back, and Krishna stayed to please him, sending Samba and the Yadu heroes on to Kushasthali.
Krishna stayed on, and the Rajasuya's grandeur was plain to all, but so was the bitterness it stirred. Duryodhana, whose heart was poisoned with envy, saw the splendor of Yudhishthira's inner palace and could not bear it, above all the sight of Draupadi serving her husbands there. The brilliance of the sacrifice and the prestige Yudhishthira had earned acted like a flame to Duryodhana's hatred. One day Yudhishthira sat on a golden throne like Indra in the hall Maya had built, surrounded by his followers, his relatives and Krishna, who was as his own eyes, while bards sang his praise. Proud Duryodhana, wearing a crown and garland and surrounded by his brothers, entered with a sword in his hand, angrily hurling insults.
However, the architect Maya had woven an illusion over the hall. Bewildered by it, Duryodhana took a dry floor for water and lifted the edge of his garment, then mistook a pool of water for solid ground and fell into it. Bhima laughed at the sight, and so did the women and the other kings, though King Yudhishthira tried to stop them; Krishna approved of their laughter. Ashamed, his face downcast and burning with anger, Duryodhana left in silence for Hastinapura. The good cried out 'Alas!', Yudhishthira was dismayed, and Krishna stayed silent: he meant to lift the earth's burden, and it was his glance that had bewildered Duryodhana. This was the wickedness of Duryodhana at the great Rajasuya sacrifice.
