The Battle with Shalva

The story · English

Listen now, O King, to another wondrous feat of Krishna, and how the lord of Saubha was slain. There once was a man named Shalva, a friend of Shishupala. He had come to Rukmini's wedding, but he was defeated in battle by the Yadus, as Jarasandha and the others also were. Consumed by a desire for revenge, Shalva made a solemn vow before all the gathered kings: 'I will make the earth empty of Yadavas; behold my prowess.' Blinded by his pride, he turned to the Lord Pashupati, the great god Shiva, and performed a rigorous penance, even eating handfuls of dust to show his devotion.

At the end of a year, Lord Shiva, who is easily pleased, offered a boon to the seeking Shalva. Shalva chose a flying vehicle that was indestructible and could travel wherever he desired. This vehicle was to be terrifying to the Vrishnis. The architect Maya, acting on the orders of Girisha, constructed this magnificent city-ship and delivered the iron Saubha to Shalva. Armed with this unstoppable craft, Shalva remembered his hatred for the Vrishnis and flew straight toward the gates of Dwarka.

Shalva did not come for peace; he arrived with a massive army and began a brutal assault. He tore through the gardens and groves of the city. His weapons rained down upon the towers, the gates, and the high palaces. He cast boulders, trees, and snakes into the streets, and a fierce wind choked the horizons with dust. Dwarka was torn apart by the Saubha and found no peace, like the earth when it was tormented by Tripura. Seeing his people in such agony, the brave Pradyumna mounted his chariot and called out to them, 'Do not fear!'

Pradyumna was joined by other heroes: Satyaki, Charudeshna, Samba, Akrura with his younger brothers, Hardikya, Bhanuvinda, Gada, Shuka and Sarana. A clash erupted between the Yadus and the forces of Shalva, as tumultuous as a war between gods and demons. Pradyumna fought with a divine brilliance; he used his arrows to destroy the illusions of the enemy. He pierced Shalva's commander with twenty-five gold-feathered arrows, and struck Shalva himself with a hundred and each of his soldiers with one. But the Saubha whirled like a firebrand, appearing in many forms and then vanishing, moving between the earth, the sky, the mountaintops, and the water. Wherever it appeared, the Yadu chiefs loosed their arrows, leaving Shalva bewildered, while the hard-pressed Vrishni heroes held their ground.

However, the tide turned when Shalva's minister, Dyuman, struck Pradyumna with a heavy mace, crushing his chest. Pradyumna fell unconscious and was carried away from the battlefield by the charioteer, the son of Daruka. As Pradyumna regained consciousness, he was horrified. 'How could you pull me away from the fight?' he asked his driver. 'No one born in the Yadu clan has ever been known to leave a battle, except me, disgraced by a charioteer with a cowardly mind. What will I say to my elders, my uncle Rama and my father Keshava? My brothers' wives will laugh and ask how the enemy made a coward of me.' The charioteer replied, 'I did this to save your life, for a driver must protect his warrior in danger, as a warrior must protect his driver, and you had fallen senseless under the mace.'
