The story · English
The battle was already under way. Pradyumna, the son of Rukmini, armed himself and drove against Dyuman, Shalva's minister, who was cutting down his troops. Smiling, he pierced Dyuman with eight arrows: four killed his four horses, one his charioteer, two cut his bow and flag, and the last took off his head. Gada, Satyaki, Samba and others crushed the army of Saubha's lord, and Saubha's soldiers fell into the ocean with severed necks. This brutal war between the Yadus and the people of Shalva raged on for twenty-seven days and nights, the sound of the battle filling the air with a tumultuous roar.
Meanwhile, Krishna had been in Indraprastha, called there by the son of Dharma. Once the Rajasuya sacrifice ended and the matter of Shishupala was settled, Krishna sought permission from the elders of the Kuru clan, the sages, and Kunti and her sons. Seeing ominous signs of a great disaster, he returned to Dwaravati. He reflected that he had come to Indraprastha with his elder brother Balarama, so the kings of Shishupala's party must surely be attacking his city. Upon seeing the chaos and assessing the city's defenses, Krishna turned to Daruka and commanded him to quickly prepare a chariot to take him to King Shalva, adding, 'Do not be alarmed; this lord of Saubha is a sorcerer.'
As Krishna arrived, Shalva, whose army was nearly destroyed, hurled a terrifying weapon—a shakti—at Krishna's charioteer. The weapon flew through the sky like a speeding meteor, lighting up the directions, but Krishna shattered it into a hundred pieces with his arrows. Krishna then pierced Shalva with sixteen arrows and riddled the Saubha wheeling in the sky, his shafts filling the sky like the rays of the sun. In a desperate move, Shalva pierced Krishna's left arm, which held the bow Sharnga, causing the bow to fall from his hand. The onlookers cried out in alarm as Shalva roared at Krishna: 'Fool, before our eyes you carried off the bride of my friend and brother Shishupala, and killed him in the assembly when he was off guard.'
Shalva threatened to kill Krishna, but the Lord replied, 'You speak in vain, dullard. Look around you; your end is here. It is the brave who show their strength, not those who talk much.' In anger, Krishna struck him on the collarbone with a powerful blow from his mace, leaving Shalva trembling and vomiting blood. Then, using his illusory powers, Shalva vanished. Suddenly, a man appeared, weeping and claiming to be a messenger from Devaki. He cried that Shalva had bound Krishna's father and led him away, as a butcher leads an animal. Driven by affection, Krishna spoke like an ordinary man, grieving that his father had been taken by someone as insignificant as Shalva, who could only have done it by first defeating Balarama, whom gods and demons cannot conquer.
Then Shalva returned with a figure that looked like Vasudeva. 'Here is your father; save him if you can,' he mocked, beheading it with his sword before Krishna's eyes and carrying the head up into the Saubha. But Krishna, whom grief cannot truly delude, soon saw through the illusion, a demon's sorcery first taught by Maya: there was no messenger, no body. His arrows cut Shalva's armour, bow and crest-jewel, and his mace smashed the Saubha into a thousand pieces that fell into the sea. When Shalva charged on foot with a mace, Krishna cut off his arm with an arrow, then struck off his head, earrings and crown with the Sudarshana discus, just as Indra once slew the demon Vritra. As the wicked king fell, the gods in heaven sounded their drums in celebration, though the victory was soon interrupted by the arrival of a furious Dantavakra.
