Devotion Crowns Every Yogi
Bhagavad Gita 6.47
Meaning · English
Among all yogis, the one who keeps me in his inner heart, whose mind is absorbed in me, and who worships me with faith, I consider the most united with me.
Three terms carry the verse. Yogi comes from yuj, to join or yoke: a yogi is someone joined to God. Bhajana comes from bhaj, to share in, to serve, to love: it means devotion as steady engagement, not an occasional gesture. Shraddha is faith, a trust that holds the heart steady. Krishna has just placed the yogi above the ascetic, the scholar and the ritualist. Now he ranks the yogis among themselves. The highest is the one whose inner self is absorbed in him and who worships with faith. Both halves matter: the mind is gone into God, and the worship is alive with trust. Krishna gives no reason beyond his own judgment, but the ranking answers a question the earlier verses leave open: if yoga beats the other paths, which yoga is best? It asks the listener to measure practice by how fully the heart is given, not by how impressive the method looks. Shankara reads this yogi as one whose mind rests in the Self, which is the Lord. Ramanuja reads it as loving devotion to a personal God, the best of all yogas. Madhva also stresses devotion, taken as the way to grace.
Two people carry the same lamp across a dark field. One watches his feet and the technique of walking. The other keeps his eyes on the house he is walking toward, and the light steadies in his hand. The walking is the practice; the house is God, and the one who fixes his gaze there is the best yogi.
1. Choose one ordinary daily act, such as making tea or washing dishes, and do it today with a single thought of God held lightly in mind. 2. Before you start, say one sentence of trust, in your own words, such as 'I place this in your hands.' 3. When your mind wanders, bring it back gently to that thought. Do not scold yourself. 4. In the evening, notice for two minutes whether that act felt different from the others.
A woman sits by her father's hospital bed at two in the morning. She has read the leaflets, learned the drug names and kept the schedule. Still she feels she is only managing, not present. The verse speaks to her. Krishna ranks the inward giving of the heart above skill at method. Step by step: she stops running through the checklist for a minute. She turns her attention to God, with whatever trust she has, and says his name or a short prayer. Then she goes back to the tasks, now done as an offering and not as a burden. The same hands do the same work, but the mind is no longer scattered across fears. Ordinary experience confirms that tasks done with a settled mind feel lighter than tasks done in dread. The verse does not promise that her father recovers, that the fear vanishes, or that prayer replaces the doctors. It names where the heart rests while the work goes on, and says that resting place is what Krishna values most.
