The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 6 · The Restless Mind

Beyond Austerity, Learning, Ritual

Bhagavad Gita 6.46

Meaning · English

The yogi is greater than the ascetics. The yogi is held greater even than the people of learning, and greater than those who perform rituals. Therefore, Arjun, become a yogi.

Krishna names three respected kinds of people and puts the yogi above each. The ascetic is the tapasvi; tapas is heat, the effort of hardship and self-denial. The learned person is the jnani; jnana is knowing, here the knowledge gained from study. The ritualist is the karmi; karma is action, here sacred acts done by rule. A yogi is one who practices yoga, which is joining: the mind steadily joined to what it seeks. Krishna does not call the other three worthless. He says the yogi stands higher, and he adds that this is the accepted view, not his private one. The reason sits in the verses nearby: hardship, learning and ritual are means, and yoga is the mind actually arriving. A person can fast, know the texts and keep every rite while the mind stays scattered. Then Krishna turns to Arjuna and tells him to become a yogi, so the praise is an invitation to him, not a ranking to admire. Shankara reads the yogi as one steady in meditation, and the learned as those with scriptural knowledge only. Ramanuja reads yoga as meditation on the self that grows into devotion. Madhva reads the yogi as one whose practice is turned toward Vishnu.

Picture someone who has built big shoulders at the gym, read every book on swimming, and watched lessons from the poolside for years. Only the one who steps into the water swims. Strength, study and ritual are the preparation on the shore. The yogi is the one in the water, with the mind actually joined to its aim.

1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes or walking to the shop, and give it ten minutes of undivided attention, phone away. 2. When the mind wanders, notice where it went, then bring it back without scolding. 3. This evening, ask yourself whether your effort, your knowing or your routine leaned on steady attention today, or stood in for it. 4. Repeat the ten minutes tomorrow at the same hour.

A grandfather sits at the lunch table after his Monday fast. He has read the scriptures all his life and kept every rite on time. Then his daughter-in-law serves the rice a little late, and he snaps at her. Krishna's ranking speaks to this moment. Effort, knowledge and observance are all present, yet the mind is not yet steady. The verse would change the moment in small steps. He would notice the heat rising before the words come out. He would let the breath settle for a few seconds, then see that the lateness was small and the hunger was his. He would speak, if at all, from that steadier place. Ordinary experience agrees that hunger and tiredness make a person short with others, and that steadiness shows most when we are tested. The verse does not promise that irritation never arises, and it does not replace rest, food or a doctor when the body needs them. It points to where the practice is meant to land: in the mind at that table.
