Perfection Ripens Over Lifetimes
Bhagavad Gita 6.45
Meaning · English
The yogi who strives with great effort, cleansed of every stain, perfected through many births, then reaches the highest path.
Three words carry it. Prayatna is effort, a deliberate push, not a mood. Kilbisha is a stain, a smear on the mind left by craving and wrong doing. Sansiddhi is full completion, the way a dish is finished only when it is cooked through. Krishna tells Arjuna that the yogi works with great effort, and that the effort does the cleaning: the stains of desire are washed out of the mind bit by bit. The finishing takes many births, and only then does the yogi reach the highest path, the goal beyond return. Krishna says this because Arjuna has just asked what happens to someone who starts yoga and falls short. The answer is that nothing is lost. The work counts, it carries on, and it ends in arrival. What it asks of the listener is steady effort without despair at how slow it is. On the commentators: Shankara reads the many births as the long ripening of knowledge that finally brings liberation. Ramanuja reads the highest path as reaching the Lord through devotion. Madhva also takes it as reaching God, and stresses that this comes by his grace after long striving.
A potter fires a pot in a kiln. One firing leaves it chalky and weak, and a second and third harden it, until it rings when tapped. Each firing is a life of effort, the hardness is the cleansing of the mind, and the ringing pot is the perfected yogi.
1. Choose one habit of mind you want to loosen, such as snapping when tired or reaching for your phone when bored. 2. For one week, at the moment you catch it, pause for three slow breaths before acting. 3. Each night, write one line: caught it, or missed it. 4. At week's end, count the catches, not the misses, and begin the next week with the same small task.
A woman has been trying for a year to stop shouting at her teenage son. Tonight, after a long day, she shouts again, and the old thought arrives: nothing has changed. The verse speaks to that moment. Krishna's picture is of a stain that wears away through repeated effort, not through one clean victory. So she can look at the year differently. The shout came a few seconds later than it used to, and she noticed it while it was happening, which she once did only the next morning. She can apologise to him, then begin again tomorrow without counting the lapse as the end of her work. Ordinary experience agrees that habits loosen slowly and that tiredness weakens restraint, so a bad evening says little about the whole direction. The verse does not promise that the next evening will be easy, or that her son will respond kindly. It also says nothing about when the effort will finish. Where anger comes from deeper trouble, such as depression or a hard illness, a doctor or counsellor is the right help alongside the effort.
