Old Practice Pulls Forward
Bhagavad Gita 6.44
Meaning · English
By that same discipline of former lives he is carried onward, even helpless against it. Merely wishing to know about yoga, he already rises beyond the fruitive portion of the Vedas.
Krishna is speaking about a person whose yoga broke off before it was finished. Three words carry the verse. Abhyasa is practice, repeated effort that leaves a groove. Avasha means without control, helpless. Jijnasu is one who wants to know, an inquirer. Shabda-brahma is the Vedas in their word-and-ritual portion, the part that promises results. The plain sense: the practice done earlier, in a past life as Krishna teaches it, does not vanish. It pulls the person forward even when he is not trying and even when he would rather resist. The helplessness is that of a boat on a current. Then comes the second claim. Such a person need not even have mastered anything. Only wanting to know about yoga already lifts him past the ritual portion of the Vedas and its rewards. The reason sits in Arjuna's worry in the verses before: does a fallen yogi come to nothing? Krishna answers that nothing is lost. Shankara reads the Vedic portion as the ritual part, whose results the inquirer outgrows. Ramanuja reads the pull as the earlier practice working on the person. Madhva reads that same practice as the means by which the Lord draws him. The verse asks of the listener only this: to take a sincere wish to know as a real beginning, however small.
A child learns to ride a bicycle, then stops for twenty years. At a friend's house she sits on one without thinking, and her feet find the pedals and her balance returns. The old practice stayed in the body, waiting. Past discipline works the same way, and the wish to know yoga is that first wobbling push.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and write down one thing you were drawn to long ago, such as a prayer, a song, or sitting quietly. 2. Notice whether it still tugs at you. Do not judge the tug, only note it. 3. This week, give that one thing ten minutes on three separate days, at the same hour. 4. After each time, write one line on whether it felt like returning to something familiar.
A retired bus driver stands at the back of a funeral and hears a chant he last heard as a boy at his grandfather's side. He has not prayed in thirty years. His breathing slows and his shoulders drop. He finds himself standing very still, and he does not know why. The verse names what is happening. Krishna teaches that earlier practice carries a person forward even when he has not chosen it. The man does not have to decide he is a seeker. The pull comes first, and a plain wish to know more follows it. He can notice the pull, stay with the chant a little longer, and ask the singer afterward what the words mean. That small curiosity is already the beginning the verse describes. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: what we practiced early, whether a tune, a prayer or a trade, comes back to the body faster than it left. The verse does not promise that the pull will grow into a steady practice without effort, and it does not ease the grief in the room. The next verses ask for striving.
