Bhagavad Gita 6.43
Meaning · English
There he regains the understanding he had gathered in his earlier body. From that point he strives once more, and further than before, toward full perfection, O joy of the Kurus.
Three words carry the verse. Buddhi-sanyoga is wisdom joined back to a person: buddhi is the discerning mind, sanyoga a joining. Paurva-dehika means belonging to the earlier body, the previous life. Sansiddhi is complete perfection, the goal of yoga. Krishna tells Arjuna that the one who fell short of that goal is born into a fitting family and finds the understanding of his earlier life joined to him again. He does not start from nothing. Then he strives again, and the word bhuyah says more, further than before. Krishna gives the reason as the question Arjuna has been carrying: what becomes of a sincere person whose practice breaks off before it is finished? His answer is that the practice is kept and the person takes it up again. He addresses Arjuna as a Kuru descendant, a man with a lineage of his own. The verse asks the listener to treat unfinished practice as unfinished, not as failed. The commentators read it in their own ways. Shankara takes it as the mind's earlier cultivation returning in the new body. Ramanuja takes it as the earlier discipline of yoga resuming. Madhva takes it as that same earlier discipline carrying him on toward perfection.
A bookmark stays between the pages when you shut the book for the night. Next evening you open at the same place and read on, not from page one. The earlier understanding is the bookmark, the new life is the evening, and the striving is the next page.
1. Choose one practice you once dropped: a prayer, a walk, an instrument, a stretch of quiet. 2. Today, spend five minutes on it, at a time you can repeat tomorrow. 3. Notice what comes back on its own, and what you still remember. 4. Start from that point, not from the beginning, and do not measure the gap. 5. Repeat for one week.
A woman lifts the lid of her late mother's harmonium after twenty years. She expects to feel foolish. Her fingers find the first notes of a hymn before she has thought about it. First she notices what has stayed. Then she plays slowly for ten minutes and stops while it is still pleasant. She does not count the lost years. She asks only where to begin tomorrow. Ordinary experience agrees on this much: something learned once comes back faster than something learned fresh. The Gita teaches more than that. Krishna speaks of understanding that crosses from one life to the next, and the verse offers that as his teaching, not as something to test here. In the harmonium moment the teaching shifts the reading of a long gap, so that it counts as a pause in the work, not as proof of failure. It does not promise skill returns whole, or that grief over the one who played before will lift. It does not replace a teacher, either, where the playing needs one.
