A Rarer Womb
Bhagavad Gita 6.42
Meaning · English
Or else he is born into a family of yogis, of those endowed with wisdom. Such a birth as this is very rare to find in this world.
Three words carry the verse. Yogi is one who is joined to the divine, from the root yuj, to yoke. Dhimat means one who has dhi, a steady, discerning intelligence, so these are people of wisdom, not merely of learning. Durlabha means hard to obtain: dur, difficult, and labha, gain. Krishna has just told Arjuna that a fallen yogi may be born into a prosperous, pious house. Now he offers a second possibility, introduced by 'else': birth in a family of wise yogis themselves. He calls this rarer than the first, and rare in the whole world. The reason is what such a home gives a child: speech, habits and example already turned toward the divine, from the first years. The problem it answers is Arjuna's fear that unfinished practice is lost. Krishna replies that it can return the child to the path with an unusually good start. Nothing here is a demand; it describes where sincere effort may lead. Shankara reads the family as one of yogis who are also wise, so the birth favors both practice and insight. Ramanuja takes it as a household devoted to the Lord's knowledge. Madhva stresses that such a birth is granted to the exceptional, which is why Krishna calls it rare.
Two seedlings are moved from a tray. One goes into ordinary garden soil. The other goes into a bed a gardener has tended for years, loose and rich, with a trellis already standing. Both grow, but the second starts with everything ready. A wise household is that prepared bed for a returning practitioner.
1. Today, think of one person whose way of living quietly steadies you: a grandparent, a teacher, a neighbor. 2. Spend ten minutes with them, in person or on a call, and ask how they handle a hard day. 3. Notice one small habit of theirs, such as how they speak or pause, and copy it once before night. 4. This week, offer someone younger a steady example of your own, in a small way.
A boy of nine sits at the kitchen table doing homework while his grandmother shells peas beside him. She hums, never raises her voice, and answers his questions without hurry. He is not being taught anything on purpose. Ordinary experience confirms that children take on the tone of the house they grow up in. The verse speaks to that moment in steps. First, it says such a home is a rare gift, so the grandmother's calm is worth noticing and not taking for granted. Second, it suggests that what is absorbed early shapes where a person turns later. Third, for an adult who did not grow up in such a house, it points to making one: a small, steady place for someone else. Krishna's teaching about earlier lives and carried-over practice is his own and is stated as such. What the verse does not promise is that a good home spares anyone grief, illness or hard choices, or replaces a doctor or a counselor when one is needed. It says only that such a beginning is uncommon and valuable.
