Nandishvara spoke to the great sage. Listen now to another deed of Shambhu, and how Shankara became Durvasas for the sake of dharma. There was a son of Brahma, a great ascetic and knower of Brahman, named Atri, husband of Anasuya. He kept Brahma's command. Wanting a son, he went with his wife to the mountain called Tryaksha-kula, to the bank of the river Nirvindhya. He held his breath by the rule and practised great austerity for a hundred years, free of the pairs of opposites. His mind was fixed: let the one changeless Lord, whoever he is, give me a fine son. A long time passed. Then from that austerity a blazing fire rose, enormous. It nearly burned every world. The gods and sages, Indra among them, were in agony.

Indra and the other gods and sages hurried to Brahma's abode, scorched by the flame. They bowed, praised him, and told him their suffering. Brahma went with the gods to Vishnu's world, bowed to the Lord of Rama, praised him, and told him the same. Vishnu, with Brahma and the gods, went quickly to Rudra's abode. He bowed to Hara and praised the Supreme Lord at length, then told him of the fire that had risen from Atri's austerity. There Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara took counsel together for the good of the worlds. Then the three, givers of boons, went swiftly to Atri's hermitage to grant the sage his wish. Atri saw them, each bearing his own mark. He bowed and praised them with fond words, and stood astonished, palms joined.

Atri said: "Brahma, Hari, Rudra, you are honoured in all three worlds, makers, keepers and destroyers. I meditated on only one Lord, for the sake of a son, whoever that one Lord is. Why have all three of you come? Settle my doubt, then give the boon I want." The three answered: "As you resolved, so it has come to pass, great sage. We three are alike, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. So three sons will be born of our portions, known across the world, increasing the fame of their parents." They went home gladly. Atri returned to his hermitage with Anasuya, glad. Then the three were born as sons. From Brahma's portion came Soma, the moon. From Vishnu's came Datta, who spread the path of renunciation. From Shiva's portion came Durvasas, tiger among sages.

Durvasas, Rudra himself, increased the radiance of Brahman and, in his mercy, tested many. Ambarisha, of the Sun's line, was a king over the seven continents. He held the Ekadashi fast firmly, resolved to break it on Dvadashi. Durvasas learned of this and came with many disciples. Dvadashi was almost over. As the king prepared to eat, he invited the sage, who went to bathe and delayed a long time on purpose. Seeing his dharma endangered, the king sipped water, as the scriptures allow, and waited. Durvasas returned, knew the king had taken water, and flared up in anger. "You invited me and drank water first, vile man. I will show you the fruit of it." His eyes red, he rose to burn the king. Then the Sudarshana discus, set there to guard the king, blazed up to burn the sage, not knowing him as Shiva, deluded by Shiva's maya.

A bodiless voice spoke from the sky: "King, this Sudarshana was given to Hari by Shambhu. Calm it. Durvasas is Shiva himself. Do not take him for an ordinary sage. He came to test you. Go quickly to him for refuge, or there will be ruin." Ambarisha praised the sage and said: "If I have given gifts, kept my dharma, honoured brahmins, then let Hari's weapon be still." The discus grew calm. Knowing him as Shiva, the king bowed. Durvasas, pleased, ate, gave a boon, and went home. He also tested Rama; Lakshmana was sent away and Rama gave him up, a tale well known. He tested Krishna and was driven in a chariot by him; he gave him a body hard as thunderbolt. He blessed Draupadi's garment, after she tore her cloth for him at the Ganga. He destroyed Hamsa and Dimbhaka, and freed many by teaching. Whoever hears this with devotion is happy here and hereafter.
