Nandishvara spoke to the sage. He said, "Now listen with love to the story of Hanuman, and to how Shiva took a new form to do good for Rama. It brings happiness to all who hear it." Once, Shiva saw the enchanting form that Vishnu had taken, the form of Mohini. Shiva was shaken, as if struck by the arrow of desire. For the sake of Rama's work, the Lord let his seed fall. The seven sages, moved in their minds by Shiva himself, caught it on a leaf and kept it with care. Then they placed it, through the ear, in Anjani, the daughter of Gautama, for Rama's purpose.

In time Shiva himself was born from her as a child with the body of a monkey, immensely strong and brave. He was named Hanuman. While still an infant, Hanuman saw the sun in the morning and took it for a small fruit. He swallowed the disc of the sun. The gods begged him to let it go. Seeing his great strength, he released it. The gods and sages blessed him with boons, and he was known as an incarnation of Shiva. Filled with joy, he went to his mother and told her everything. At her command he went each day to the sun and learned every branch of knowledge from him. Then, at the sun's word, he went to Sugriva.

Hanuman, a part of Rudra, had his mother's permission. Sugriva had been cast out by his elder brother Vali, who had taken his brother's wife. Hanuman stayed with Sugriva on Mount Rishyamuka, became his wise minister, and did him good in every way. Then Rama came there with his brother, grieving, his wife stolen. Hanuman brought Rama and Sugriva together in friendship. Rama killed Vali, the proud sinner who had used his brother's wife. At Rama's command, Hanuman began the search for Sita with many monkeys. Learning that she was in Lanka, he leapt across the sea at once, with no one's help. In Lanka he did astonishing deeds of courage.

He gave Sita the token from his master, took away her grief, and told her of Rama, which kept her alive. Taking her token, he turned back toward Rama. On the way he tore up Ravana's garden and killed many rakshasas, and he killed Ravana's son along with many of them. He fearlessly caused great havoc. Ravana had cloth wrapped tightly around him, soaked in oil, and set it on fire. Hanuman leapt from roof to roof and burned all of Lanka, sparing only Vibhishana's house. He dropped into the sea, put out his burning tail, and reached the far shore. Untired, he came to Rama and gave him Sita's jewel.

At Rama's order Hanuman had a bridge built over the sea, bringing many great mountains. Rama, wishing to cross and win, set up a Shiva linga and worshipped it. By its blessing he gained victory, crossed the ocean, and surrounded Lanka with the monkeys. War began with the rakshasas. Hanuman killed demons and guarded Rama's army. When Lakshmana fell to a spear, he brought him back to life with the herb sanjivani. He destroyed Ravana with all his kin. He also killed Mahiravana, and brought Rama and Lakshmana safely back from his realm. Hanuman spread devotion to Rama in the world. He is called Rama's messenger, slayer of demons, tender to his devotees. Whoever hears this with devotion enjoys all desires here, and at the end attains liberation.

नंदीश्वर ने मुनि से कहा, "अब प्रेम से हनुमान की कथा सुनो, और यह भी कि शिव ने राम का हित करने के लिए कैसे नया रूप धारण किया। यह कथा सुनने वाले सभी को सुख देती है।" एक बार शिव ने विष्णु का धारण किया हुआ मोहिनी रूप देखा, जो मन को मोह लेने वाला था। कामदेव के बाण से आहत हुए जैसे शिव विचलित हो गए। राम के कार्य के लिए प्रभु ने अपना वीर्य गिरा दिया। शिव की ही प्रेरणा से मन में प्रेरित सप्तर्षियों ने उसे पत्ते पर उठा लिया और यत्न से रख लिया। फिर राम के प्रयोजन से उन्होंने उसे कान के मार्ग से गौतम की पुत्री अंजनी में स्थापित कर दिया।

समय आने पर उससे स्वयं शिव वानर के शरीर वाले बालक के रूप में जन्मे, जो अत्यंत बलवान और वीर थे। उनका नाम हनुमान रखा गया। हनुमान ने शैशव में ही प्रातःकाल सूर्य को देखा और उसे कोई छोटा फल समझ लिया। उन्होंने सूर्य के मंडल को निगल लिया। देवताओं ने उनसे उसे छोड़ देने की विनती की। उनका महान बल देखकर उन्होंने उसे छोड़ दिया। देवताओं और ऋषियों ने उन्हें वरदान दिए, और वे शिव के अवतार के रूप में जाने गए। आनंद से भरकर वे माता के पास गए और उन्हें सब कुछ बता दिया। माता की आज्ञा से वे प्रतिदिन सूर्य के पास जाते और उनसे सब विद्याओं की शिक्षा लेते। फिर सूर्य के कहने पर वे सुग्रीव के पास चले गए।

रुद्र के अंश हनुमान को माता की अनुमति प्राप्त थी। सुग्रीव को उसके बड़े भाई बालि ने निकाल दिया था और उसकी पत्नी को अपने अधिकार में ले लिया था। हनुमान ऋष्यमूक पर्वत पर सुग्रीव के साथ रहे, उसके बुद्धिमान मंत्री बने और हर प्रकार से उसका भला किया। फिर राम अपने भाई के साथ वहाँ आए, दुखी, क्योंकि उनकी पत्नी हर ली गई थी। हनुमान ने राम और सुग्रीव में मित्रता करा दी। राम ने अभिमानी पापी बालि को मार डाला, जिसने अपने भाई की पत्नी को भोगा था। राम की आज्ञा से हनुमान ने बहुत से वानरों के साथ सीता की खोज आरंभ की। यह जानकर कि वे लंका में हैं, वे तुरंत किसी की सहायता के बिना समुद्र लाँघ गए। लंका में उन्होंने साहस के आश्चर्यजनक कार्य किए।

उन्होंने सीता को अपने स्वामी की निशानी दी, उनका शोक हर लिया और राम की बातें सुनाईं, जिससे उनके प्राण बने रहे। उनकी निशानी लेकर वे राम की ओर लौट पड़े। मार्ग में उन्होंने रावण की वाटिका उजाड़ दी और बहुत से राक्षसों को मार डाला, और रावण के पुत्र को भी बहुतों के साथ मार दिया। उन्होंने निर्भय होकर भारी उत्पात मचाया। रावण ने उन पर कसकर कपड़ा लपेटवाया, उसे तेल में भिगोया और आग लगवा दी। हनुमान एक छत से दूसरी छत पर कूदते हुए पूरी लंका जला गए, केवल विभीषण का घर छोड़ दिया। उन्होंने समुद्र में कूदकर अपनी जलती पूँछ बुझाई और दूसरे किनारे पहुँच गए। बिना थके वे राम के पास आए और उन्हें सीता की चूड़ामणि दी।

राम की आज्ञा से हनुमान ने बहुत से बड़े पर्वत लाकर समुद्र पर सेतु बनवाया। राम ने पार जाकर विजय पाने की इच्छा से शिवलिंग की स्थापना की और उसकी पूजा की। उसके वरदान से उन्हें विजय मिली, उन्होंने सागर पार किया और वानरों के साथ लंका को घेर लिया। राक्षसों से युद्ध आरंभ हुआ। हनुमान ने दैत्यों को मारा और राम की सेना की रक्षा की। जब लक्ष्मण शक्ति के प्रहार से गिर पड़े, तब उन्होंने संजीवनी बूटी से उन्हें फिर जीवित किया। उन्होंने रावण को उसके सारे कुल के साथ नष्ट कर दिया। उन्होंने महिरावण को भी मारा और राम तथा लक्ष्मण को उसके लोक से सकुशल लौटा लाए। हनुमान ने संसार में राम की भक्ति फैलाई। वे राम के दूत, दैत्यों का नाश करने वाले और भक्तों पर कोमल कहलाते हैं। जो इसे भक्ति से सुनता है, वह यहाँ सब कामनाओं का भोग करता है और अंत में मोक्ष पाता है।
