The story · English

Nandishvara spoke to Brahma's son. He said: listen to the avatar of Shiva called the Bull, the one that ended Hari's pride. Long ago the gods and the demons were tormented by old age and death. They made a pact, because they wanted the jewels hidden in the Milk Ocean. They set out to churn it, but could not agree on how. Then a voice came from the sky, deep as thunder, sent by Shiva's command. It said: churn the Milk Ocean, and you will gain strength and wisdom, without doubt. Use Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. Work together, and do it with care. So, having propitiated Shiva and at his command, they went to Mandara, golden and straight, and pulled it up by force. But carrying it, they lost their strength.

The mountain slipped from their arms and fell on gods and demons alike, crushing them. Their effort was broken. When they came to their senses they praised the Lord of the world, and by his will they lifted the mountain again and set it down on the north shore of the Milk Ocean. They made Vasuki the rope and churned. Out came Shri, who is Lakshmi, beloved of Hari. Then Dhanvantari, the moon, the great tree Parijata, the horse Uchchaihshravas, the elephant Airavata, wine, Hari's bow, the conch, the wish-granting cows, the Kaustubha jewel, and the nectar. But also Kalakuta, a great poison blazing like the fire at the world's end, which terrified everyone. Shankara held it in his throat to save the gods. Vishnu took Lakshmi, the conch and Kaustubha. The Sun took the horse, and Indra took Parijata and Airavata.

Drops of nectar had spilled, and from them rose countless women of wonderful beauty, with faces like the full moon, driving the world mad with desire. Deluded by Shiva's command, the demons seized them, and fought the gods for the nectar. Led by Bali, they beat the gods and took it. The gods, shaken by Shiva's maya, went to Shankara. By Shiva's order Vishnu took the form of Mohini, a woman, tricked the demons, and gave the nectar to the gods. The demons took the nectar-born women to their strongholds, guarded by machines, and swore not to touch them if the gods won. Then came a terrible battle. Protected by Vishnu, the gods won. The surviving demons fled into Patala, and Vishnu followed. There he saw the women, and desire overcame him.

Vishnu stayed in Patala and played with them. He fathered sons, strong and skilled in war, who shook the whole earth. They brought great suffering to heaven and earth. The gods and sages bowed to Brahma and told him. Brahma took them to Mount Kailasa, saw Shiva, and bowed again and again. With folded hands he praised him, saying: Victory, great God, lord of all. Protect the worlds, which Vishnu's sons are tormenting from Patala. Hari is lost in these women and lives there still. Shiva, ocean of mercy, heard Brahma, the sages and the gods. To protect the worlds and bring Vishnu back, he took the form of a bull. Roaring, holding his bow Pinaka, the bull entered the cave, and his terrible bellows made cities fall and the people tremble.

Hari's sons, deluded by Shiva's maya, took up their bows and charged, shouting. The bull tore them apart with hooves and horns, and they died. Vishnu came out, bowed, and hurried after him, then shot the bull with arrows and divine weapons. Furious, the bull swallowed those weapons, bellowed until the three worlds shook, and ripped at Vishnu with hooves and horns. Hari, still deluded, weakened and his pride was gone. He understood that this was Shiva. Bowing, hands folded, he said: Great God, ocean of mercy, your maya deluded me. I fought you, my own Lord. Forgive me. Shiva said: why did you not know me? Remember who you are. Turn away from this. Then he gave Vishnu a new, blazing disc. Shiva cursed the place: anyone entering it, except a calm sage, a demon, or one born of Shiva, would die at once. Vishnu returned to heaven, and the world was well. Hearing this story destroys enemies and gives enjoyment and liberation.
