Nandishvara said to Sanatkumara: listen to the greatest avatar of Mahesha, called Pippalada. It begins with the sage Dadhici, born in the line of Bhrigu, a great devotee of Shiva. In his fight with King Kshuva, Dadhici defeated even Vishnu, and cursed him and the gods who stood with him, with Shiva's help. His wife was Suvarcha, a faithful and blessed woman, and she too once cursed the gods. From her, Mahadeva, master of many divine plays, would appear as Pippalada. Sanatkumara bowed with folded hands and praised Nandishvara. He said he had heard from Brahma of Vishnu's victory in the fight with Kshuva, and of the curse. Now he wanted to hear of the curse Suvarcha gave the gods, and then the story of Pippalada. Nandishvara, remembering Shiva's lotus feet, began.

Once Indra and the gods were beaten by the demons who served the demon Vritra. They had left their best weapons at Dadhici's hermitage, and without them they were defeated. Struck down, they went to Brahma's world and told him their trouble. Brahma explained that Tvashtri had made Vritra by austerity to kill them, and that Vritra was now a mighty lord of the demons. Then he gave the remedy: long ago the sage Dadhici had won a boon from Shiva, that his bones would be as hard as thunderbolts. Ask him for his bones, Brahma said, and he will give them. Make a thunderbolt from them and kill Vritra. Indra went with his teacher and the gods to the hermitage, saw the sage with Suvarcha, and bowed to him.

Dadhici understood why they had come and sent Suvarcha away to another part of the hermitage. Then Indra spoke plainly, as one who wants his purpose served. He said Tvashtri had wronged the gods and sages, and that they had come to Dadhici as a protector and giver. He asked for his bones, hard as thunderbolts, so that he could make a weapon and kill the enemy of the gods. Dadhici, who loved to help others, meditated on Shiva, his lord, and gave up his body. Freed from every bond, he went at once to Brahma's world. Flowers rained down and all were amazed. Indra called the cow Surabhi to lick the body clean, and Vishvakarma made weapons from the bones: the thunderbolt, an arrow called Brahmashiras, and many others. Indra, strengthened by Shiva's power, rushed at Vritra like Rudra at death, and cut off his head as if it were a mountain peak. The gods celebrated.

Suvarcha came back, did not find her husband, finished the household work as he had told her, and returned to see the gods standing there. She understood what they had done and was furious. She said: "Gods, you are wicked, clever for your own ends, unwise and greedy. From today, all of you, with Indra, will become beasts." Then she wished to follow her husband and built a pyre of sacred wood. A voice from the sky told her not to be rash: carry the sage's energy in her womb and bring it forth, for a woman with child should not burn her body. She sat on a stone and split her belly open. A child came out, shining and divine, lighting the ten directions: Rudra himself, born in his own play. Suvarcha knew him, bowed, praised him, and held his form in her heart.

She smiled at her son and said: "Lord, stay long near this ashvattha tree and give happiness to all. Now let me go to my husband's world, where I will meditate on you as Rudra." In deep samadhi she followed her husband and reached Shiva's world, where she gladly served Shankara. Then Brahma, Vishnu and the gods came with the sages, happy, as if called, and bowed to Rudra born as a sage's son. They held a great festival with drums, dancing, music and flowers. They performed his rites, and Brahma named him Pippalada. Then they left, and Pippalada, Rudra himself, sat under the ashvattha tree and practised austerity for the good of the world for a long time. Later he saw Padma, daughter of King Anaranya, at the river Pushpabhadra and wanted her. The frightened king said nothing when asked; Pippalada threatened to burn everything, and the court was dimmed by his power. Weeping, the king gave her to the old sage. She served him as Lakshmi serves Narayana, and he became young and had ten sons. Seeing Shani's torment, Pippalada gave a boon: no one under sixteen would be troubled by Shani, and whoever ignored this would be burned to ashes. Out of fear, Shani leaves Shiva's devotees alone. Gadhi, Kaushika and Pippalada, remembered, destroy Shani's harm; whoever reads or hears this story with devotion gains all they wish.
