Nandishvara spoke to Sanatkumara. Listen, he said, to the holy avatar of Shiva called Jatila, the one with matted hair. Long ago Sati, daughter of Daksha, gave up her body at her father's sacrifice, because he had shown her no respect. She was born again to Mena and the mountain Himavat, and she was called Parvati. She went into a deep forest with two friends and performed hard austerities, wanting Shankara as her husband. To test her penance, Shiva sent the seven sages to the place where she practised it. They tried her with great care, but no effort of theirs could shake her. They returned, bowed to Shiva, told him everything, and with his leave went back to their own world.
When the sages had gone, Shiva himself wished to test Parvati's resolve. He took the form of a brahmacharin, a student of sacred discipline. He was very old, in the body of a brahmin, glowing with his own light, and he carried a staff and an umbrella. In this matted-haired shape he walked to Parvati's forest. There she sat on a raised platform among her friends, like the moon's bright crescent. He came close, and she saw a shining old brahmin, hairy of limb, calm, with staff, deerskin, matted hair and water pot. She honoured him with every offering, and asked gently after his welfare: "Who are you, and where have you come from? You light up this forest. Tell me, best of those who know the Vedas."
He answered quickly: "I am a brahmin, a wanderer who goes where I please. I live by penance, and I bring comfort to others." Then he stood near her, hiding his true form. He said: "What can I tell you? Yet it is painful to see. You are young, made for pleasure, and you waste yourself in penance. Who are you, whose daughter, and why are you alone in this empty forest?" Parvati laughed and told her story: Sati, Daksha's daughter, who left her body because her father reviled her husband; her new birth in Himavat's house; Shiva, who left her and burned Kama to ash. "I have chosen Shankara in mind, word and deed. I know he is hard to win. I want the wielder of the Pinaka bow, above Indra, Vishnu and Brahma."
Smiling, the old man said: "Why this choice? That Rudra rides a bull, he is wild in form, matted, always alone, and above all detached. Your form and his are opposites. I do not like it, but do as you wish." Then, to test her, he ran himself down at length. Parvati grew very angry. "You are some rogue in a brahmin's dress. You insult Shiva and do not know him. A man who does so burns up the merit of a lifetime. Shiva is the supreme lord, without qualities and beyond change." As he began to speak again, she told her friend Vijaya: "Stop him. Whoever hears Shiva insulted shares the sin. He cannot be killed, being a brahmin, so we will leave this place."
As she lifted her foot to go, Shiva himself caught hold of her garment. He showed his own divine form, the one she meditated on, and she stood with her face lowered. He said: "Where are you going, leaving me? I cannot give you up. I tested you, and you are firm in devotion. I came in a brahmin's shape to learn your heart. I am pleased. Ask any boon. From today I am your servant, bound by your penance, and one moment without you feels like an age. Put aside your shyness. You are my eternal wife. Come, let us go to my mountain." Parvati was glad, and all the pain of her penance left her. Shyly she said: "Be my husband." Shiva took her hand by rite and went with her to Kailasa. Having won him, she carried out the work of the gods. Nandishvara closed: whoever hears this story with love becomes happy and reaches the goal.
