Nandishvara spoke to the sage Sanatkumara. He said, "Listen to another descent of Shiva, the supreme Self. It is called the Dancer." Parvati, daughter of Himalaya, went into the forest and performed pure austerities to win Shiva. Shiva grew pleased with her fine penance. He wanted to test her conduct, and so he came gladly to give her a boon. Delighted with her, he showed her his own form and said, "Ask for a boon." Parvati saw that supreme form and heard his words. She was overjoyed, bowed deeply to him, and prepared to answer.
Parvati said, "Lord of the gods, if you are pleased, and if a boon is mine to ask, then be my husband. Show me your kindness. With your leave I will go to my father's house. Lord, you must come to my father as well. Come as a beggar and ask him for alms, spreading your own good fame. Make everything of my father's household fruitful. Then, in the proper way, marry me, for the gods' work to be done. Fulfil my wish, great Lord. You are always free of change, and you are named the one who loves his devotees. I am your devotee always." Shiva, the loving Lord, answered, "So be it." Then he vanished and went to his own mountain.
Parvati, glad at heart, went home with her two friends, taking a form that suited her purpose. Hearing she had come, Himalaya and Mena set out with their household to see their daughter. They saw her face bright with joy and brought her into the house. They held a great festival, and Himalaya gave wealth to the brahmins and others. He had auspicious rites performed with the chanting of the Vedas. He sat with his daughter in the courtyard, content. Then Mena and Himalaya went to bathe in the Ganga. In that moment Shiva, playful and loving to his devotees, became a skilled dancer and came to Mena's door. A horn was in his left hand, a small drum in his right, a patched cloth on his back, and red garments on him. He was expert at dance and song.
In Mena's courtyard the dancer danced in many ways and sang most beautifully. He sounded the horn and the drum, and he sang many kinds of song with delight. Townspeople came running, men and women, young and old. All were struck still by the music and the dancing, and Mena too. Mena went to give him jewels set out on golden dishes, her heart pleased with his show. He would not take them. He asked for alms, and for Shiva herself, Parvati. Then he began again to dance and sing. Mena heard this and was furious and astonished. She scolded the beggar and wanted him thrown out. Just then Himalaya returned from the Ganga and saw a man in his courtyard. Mena told him everything, and he too was enraged. He ordered his servants to drive the beggar out.
The beggar burned like a great fire, too fierce to touch, and no one could drive him out. Skilled in many divine plays, he then showed Himalaya his boundless power. Himalaya saw him as Vishnu, then as Brahma, then in an instant as the sun. Then he saw him as Rudra, wonderful and fearsome, laughing, radiant, with Parvati beside him. Seeing many forms, Himalaya was amazed and filled with joy. The beggar again asked for alms, for Parvati, the mother of the world, and took nothing else. Then the Lord vanished, at Parvati's word, and went home. Mena and Himalaya understood: Shiva had tricked them, and their daughter must be given to him. Their devotion grew great. Rudra then married Parvati in due rite. Nandishvara ended: whoever hears this tale with love will be happy and reach the goal.
