Nandishvara said: Listen, wise one, to the avatar of Shiva called Kirata, the hunter, the form in which he killed the demon Muka and gave Arjuna a boon. The Pandavas had been beaten by Suyodhana, and they came to the forest called Dvaita with the faithful Draupadi. There they lived in comfort on the pot the Sun had given them. Then Suyodhana sent the great sage Durvasa to trick them. Durvasa arrived with ten thousand disciples and asked the Pandavas for a meal. They agreed and sent the sages off to bathe. But there was no food in the house. The Pandavas despaired and thought of giving up their lives.
Draupadi remembered Krishna, and he came at once. He ate a morsel of greens, and all the sages felt full. Durvasa knew his disciples were satisfied and left. By Krishna's kindness the Pandavas were free of their trouble. Then they asked him: "What will happen? A strong enemy has risen against us. What should we do, lord?" Remembering the lotus feet of Shiva, Krishna answered: "Listen, and then act. I went to Dvaraka wanting to defeat my enemies, and I thought over the teaching of the great Upamanyu. I served Shiva for seven months on Mount Batuka, and he gave me every wish. All my strength comes from him. Serve Shambhu, who gives enjoyment and liberation." Krishna comforted them and vanished, and went swiftly to Dvaraka.
The Pandavas sent a Bhilla, a forest hunter, to test the character of Duryodhana. He came back and reported that Duryodhana's qualities were sound. Hearing it, the Pandavas grew very sad. They said to one another: "What are we to do? Where can we go? We have the strength, yet we are tied by the bond of our word." At that moment Vyasa arrived, his forehead smeared with ash, wearing rudraksha beads and matted hair, murmuring the five-syllable mantra, full of love for Shiva. He shone like dharma itself. The brothers rose, gave him a seat of kusa grass and deerskin, and worshipped him, saying: "We are blessed. Our austerities have borne fruit. Our sorrow is gone now that we see you. Wicked men have hurt us deeply. Give us a teaching that will end our pain quickly."
Vyasa answered gladly: "Do not grieve. You are blessed, and you have kept your truth. Good people hold to dharma even at the end of life. To me you and the Kauravas are equal, yet the righteous take the side of right. The blind Dhritarashtra gave up dharma out of greed and took your kingdom. You are his sons, as they are. He should have shown mercy to orphans. What has happened will not be undone. The wicked one will meet his end. A planted seed grows. So do not grieve. Good will come to you." The Pandavas, led by Yudhishthira, replied: "Krishna told us long ago to worship Shankara, and we grew careless. Show us that path again." Vyasa said: "I serve Shiva myself. Serve him with love, and your joy will be beyond measure. All sorrow comes from not serving him."
Among the five, Vyasa named Arjuna as the one fit for the worship, and he chose a place for the penance. He told them: "Everything seen in this world, from Brahma onward, is Shiva's form, to be worshipped and meditated on. Shiva is pleased in a short time by devotion, and he gives enjoyment and liberation. But first one should recite the Sakra Vidya, the knowledge of Indra, with a steady mind. This is the proper course for a kshatriya. Arjuna should recite it first. Indra will test him and be satisfied, remove his obstacles, and then Shiva will give him the best mantra." Vyasa called Arjuna, taught him the Vidya, and gave him the rules for worshipping the earthen linga. Arjuna bathed and received it facing east. "Go to Indrakila, near the Jahnavi, and practice austerities there. The Vidya will stay unseen and protect you." Vyasa blessed the brothers and vanished.
Arjuna shone with a bright, unmatched splendor from the mantra. The Pandavas, seeing it, felt sure of victory. "Only you can do this," they said, and though they were reluctant and sorrowful at parting, they sent him off. Draupadi held back her tears and said: "Do what Vyasa told you with care. May your road be good, and may Shankara be kind." The five stayed behind in great sorrow, saying that a loved one's company does not hurt, but parting doubles the pain. Then Vyasa came again, an ocean of mercy. They honored him and said: "Stay a while, sage. Your sight dissolves our grief." He stayed and told them many tales. Yudhishthira asked: "Has anyone ever suffered as we have?" Vyasa named Nala of Nishadha, Hariscandra, and Rama, whose sorrows were greater. He told Yudhishthira that the body is a heap of sorrow, and that he should do whatever pleases Shambhu.
Meanwhile Arjuna, firm in his vow, went through the mountain fortresses. He gained a yaksha and killed many robbers on the way. Glad at heart, he came to the great mountain near the Ganga, to a lovely place with an asoka grove. He bathed, bowed to his guru, took the dress Vyasa had told him, drew in his senses, and steadied his mind. He made an earthen linga, straight and fine, and meditated in front of it on a mass of unsurpassed light. Three times a day he bathed and worshipped Hara again and again. A radiance rose from his head. Indra's spies saw it, grew afraid, and went to Indra: "We do not know whether he is a god, a sage, the Sun, or fire. His brightness has scorched us."
Indra understood what his son wanted. He sent the guardians away, became an old brahmin student, and went to test Arjuna. Arjuna honored him and asked why he had come. The old man said: "So young, and doing austerities. For liberation, or for victory? Penance for pleasure is wrong. Indra gives happiness, not liberation. Do real austerity." Arjuna grew angry and answered: "I do not want a kingdom or liberation. I do this by Vyasa's word. Go away. Do you want to make me fall?" Indra was pleased and showed his own shining form. Ashamed, Arjuna was comforted. Indra offered a boon, and Arjuna asked for victory over his enemies. Indra said: "Drona, Bhima, Karna, Asvatthama are hard to beat. Shiva alone can give this. Give up my mantra and worship him with the earthen linga." He charged his spies to guard Arjuna and returned home. Arjuna bowed and kept on, worshipping Shiva.
