Nandishvara tells Sanatkumara how it went. Arjuna bathed as the rules require and set the sacred syllables on his body. He fixed his mind on Shiva in the way Vyasa had taught. He stood on the sole of one foot, his eyes held on the sun, repeating the five-syllable mantra of Shambhu, the best of all mantras, and remembering Shiva with love. The heat of his austerity grew until the gods were amazed. They went to Shiva and said, "Lord of all, one man alone is doing this tapas for your sake. Whatever such a man desires, is there anything you would refuse him?" Then they praised Shiva in many ways and stood with their eyes on his feet. Shiva smiled and said, "Go back to your homes, all of you. I will certainly do what you need." They went away, sure of it.

Meanwhile a demon named Muka arrived. Duryodhana, the schemer, had sent him against Arjuna, and he had taken the form of a boar. He came by the path where Arjuna stood, breaking off the peaks of the mountain, tearing up trees by the dozen, roaring in many voices and rushing forward at terrible speed. Arjuna saw him and remembered Shiva's lotus feet, then began to think. "Who is this, and where does he come from? He looks cruel. He surely means me harm. I have killed many demons before, and perhaps one of theirs comes for revenge. Or he is a friend of Duryodhana, working for his good." He reasoned that the sight of a friend gladdens the heart, while the sight of an enemy disturbs it, and that the eyes show the mind within.

Arjuna went on. The eyes are of four kinds: bright at meeting a friend, moist at seeing a son, sidelong with a lover, and red at the sight of an enemy. "All my senses are troubled by this creature. He is an enemy and must be killed. My teacher's word weighs on me today, and a king must strike such a foe without further thought. That is why I carry weapons." So he fixed an arrow to his bow and stood ready. At that moment Shiva, who loves his devotees, came to protect Arjuna and to test his devotion. He took the form of a clever, wonderful hunter of the forest tribe, with his attendants beside him, and came quickly to destroy the demon.

The hunter had his waist cloth tied tight and the banner of Ishana bound on. White lines were drawn across his body. He carried a bow and arrows, with a quiver of arrows on his back. His attendants were made hunters too, and Shiva himself became their chief, the leader of the host. He set out with many shouts, and the boar's roar filled all ten directions. The mountains and Arjuna were shaken by the cries of the forest. Arjuna thought, "Could this be Shiva, who brings good? Krishna and Vyasa have told me that Shiva gives joy and liberation, that remembering his name brings welfare, and that for those who worship him sorrow does not come even in dreams."

He reasoned that if grief ever comes to a devotee, it comes from past deeds, and it is small however large it looks. Shiva can also cut short what must be endured, if he wishes. He can turn poison into nectar and nectar into poison, and no one can forbid him. "Fortune may come or go, death may stand near. Let people blame him or praise him, Shiva gives joy. Sometimes he sends sorrow to test, and in the end he gives happiness, as gold is purified in fire. So by worshipping him I will find the highest peace." While he thought this, the boar came within arrow range, with Shiva close behind. Between them a strange horn showed. Shiva hurried on to protect Arjuna.

Then both let fly. Shiva's arrow struck the boar's tail, and Arjuna's arrow struck its mouth. The one that hit the tail passed through and came out of the mouth, then sank into the earth. Arjuna's arrow fell to the side. The boar was the demon Muka, and he fell dead on the ground at once. The gods were full of joy. They rained flowers, cried out in victory, and bowed again and again. Shiva was pleased and Arjuna was glad. Arjuna looked at the demon's cruel shape and said, "What a fearsome demon, and what a wonderful form he took to kill me. Shiva has protected me, and the Lord has given me this understanding today." He said Shiva's name over and over, bowed to him and praised him.

Nandishvara said, "Listen, Sanatkumara, to the play of the Supreme Self, full of love for his devotees and meant to show how firm Arjuna was." Shiva sent one of his attendants quickly to fetch the arrow. Arjuna went for it too. They reached it together, and Arjuna scolded the man and took the arrow. The attendant said, "Why do you take it? This arrow is ours. Let it go, best of sages." Arjuna answered, "You speak without knowing, forest-dweller. I shot this arrow today. How is it yours? It carries my name, with its lines and feathers." The hunter laughed. "You look like an ascetic but you are not practising austerity. How can an ascetic lie? You have not met my lord, the chief of the host, who has many hunters with him and can punish or favour. That arrow will not stay with you. Theft and deceit drain the fruit of austerity away, and you will be ungrateful."

The attendant went on. "My master loosed that arrow for your sake. He killed your enemy and saved you, and you are ungrateful. If you need an arrow, ask my lord. He can give you many like it. Do not repay kindness with harm." Arjuna grew angry, remembered Shiva, and answered with measured words. "You are not speaking the truth, forest-dweller. I am a king and you are a thief. How could we fight? I must fight those of strength, never the low. Your master will be just like you. We give, and you forest people take. Why should I beg from your hunter king? I have plenty of arrows, and I would have given you some if you had asked. But let your lord come and fight me. If he wins, he may take the arrow and go home." The hunter answered, "You are a fool and no sage. Why do you want to die? Give it up."

Arjuna said, "Your master will come, and I will show him what comes of this. A fight between us would be like a lion against a jackal. It is not fitting, yet I will fight him. Go to him." The attendant went back to the hunter chief, who was Shiva himself, and told him all of it. Shiva was glad and came with his army. Arjuna saw the host, took his bow and arrows, and stepped forward. The hunter sent his messenger again: "Look at my army, ascetic. Let go of the arrow and go. Why seek death for so small a matter? Your brothers will grieve, your wife too, and you will lose the earth." Arjuna replied, "If I give up my arrow I disgrace my family and my skills are useless. A lion is never afraid of a jackal, nor a king of a forest dweller." The messenger took this back, and Shiva came with his army.

Arjuna saw him coming and meditated on Shiva, then fought a terrible battle. The attendants pressed him with sharp weapons, and he cut down their arrows and drove them into all ten directions. Then Shiva and Arjuna fought each other with many weapons, both mighty. Shiva felt pity in his heart. He cut Arjuna's weapons and armour away until only his body was left. Arjuna remembered Shiva and wrestled him. The earth and sea shook, and the gods were afraid. They fought in the air as well, leaping up and down. Arjuna took hold of Shiva's feet and whirled him around. Shiva laughed, for he had done all this to make Arjuna his servant. Then he showed his true and lovely form, the one Vyasa had taught for meditation. Arjuna was struck with wonder and shame. "This is Shiva, whom I have attacked. His maya is strong and I was deceived." He folded his hands and fell at Shiva's feet. "Forgive my offence." Shiva lifted him and said, "Do not grieve, Arjuna. You are my devotee and I tested you." He offered a boon. Arjuna praised him as the god of Kailasa, the five-faced, three-eyed, blue-throated lord, and asked that his enemies' danger pass and that he gain success in this world and beyond. Shiva gave him his own invincible weapon, the Pashupata, and said, "Krishna will help you. He is my devotee. By my power make your kingdom free of thorns, and with your brothers have righteous works done." He laid a hand on Arjuna's head and vanished. Arjuna returned to his hermitage remembering Shiva. His brothers and Draupadi were overjoyed to hear it all, and flowers mixed with sandalwood fell on the hermitage. Krishna came to meet Arjuna and was glad. Nandishvara closed: "So I have told you of Shiva, who removes all sorrow. I serve him always, so serve him too." This is the Kirata, the eighty-eighth avatar, and whoever hears or tells it obtains all their desires.
