Mind Fixed, Doubt Gone
Bhagavad Gita 7.1
Meaning · English
The Lord said: Arjun, son of Pritha, listen how you shall know me completely and free from doubt, with your mind attached to me, practicing bhakti yog, and taking refuge in me.
Krishna opens a new chapter with a promise and a condition. The promise is that Arjuna will know him samagram, completely, and asamshaya, without doubt. The condition is in two phrases. Asakta-manas means a mind that clings, the way a hand clings to a rail. Mat-ashraya means taking shelter in him, leaning your weight on something. Yoga here is bhakti yog, the joining of the mind to him through devotion, and yunjan says it is something Arjuna is practicing, not something he has finished. The reason Krishna gives is that this knowledge is not gathered like facts. A mind that is scattered and half-committed gets only part of it, so doubt stays. A mind that is attached and sheltered can take in the whole. Then he asks Arjuna only to listen. Shankara's commentary reads the knowing as real understanding of the Lord's nature. Ramanuja takes the yoga as loving devotion and the knowing as grasping the Lord with all his qualities. Madhva stresses surrender to the Lord as the way to know him. All three agree that the listening comes first.
A man crosses a fast, shallow stream on slippery stones, one hand gripping a rope fixed to both banks. Because the rope holds, he steps without fear and sees where each foot lands. The rope is the attached mind and the shelter. The clear footing is knowing without doubt.
1. Pick one short time today, five minutes after waking or before sleep, and sit quietly with one name, image or line of prayer that you already love. 2. When your mind wanders, bring it back to that one thing, as often as needed, without scolding yourself. 3. Before a worry or decision later in the day, pause for three breaths and recall it. 4. At night, notice whether any doubt felt lighter, and write one line about it.
A woman sits in a hospital corridor while her mother is in surgery. She rereads the same message, scrolls the same page and rehearses every possible result. Her mind attaches to everything and rests on nothing. The verse asks for one thing to lean on and one thing to do. She chooses a single steady anchor, the prayer her mother taught her, and returns to it each time the rehearsing starts. Then she listens, to the nurse, to the surgeon, to her own breathing, instead of demanding an answer in advance. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind given one steady thing to hold wears itself out less than a mind chasing every thought. Her doubt about the outcome does not vanish, but the scattering stops, and she can hear what is said when it is said. The verse does not promise that the surgery will go well, that grief will be spared, or that anyone should skip the doctors. Its promise is about knowing Krishna, not about controlling events.
