Bhagavad Gita 7.2
Meaning · English
I shall reveal to you this knowledge in full, together with wisdom. Having known it, nothing further remains to be known in this world.
Krishna uses two words. Jnana is knowledge: what is taught and understood. Vijnana is wisdom in the sense of knowledge lived and verified, where the idea has become your own seeing. He promises both together, and he promises them ashesha, without remainder, nothing held back. Then comes the claim: once this is known, nothing else in this world is left that needs knowing. Krishna is not saying that Arjuna will learn every fact there is. He is saying there is one thing which, once known, leaves no gap behind it. The reason he gives it now is Arjuna's state. Arjuna stands in the chariot torn by questions, and half-answers would not steady him. So Krishna offers the whole picture, and the verses after this one begin to supply it. What it asks of the listener is to hear to the end and not stop at the first piece. The commentators read the two words differently. Shankara takes jnana as knowledge of the Self and Brahman received through teaching, and vijnana as the direct experience of it. Ramanuja takes the knowledge to be of the Lord and of all that belongs to him, so that knowing him means knowing everything that depends on him. Madhva stresses knowing the Lord's supreme nature as distinct from everything else, which stands in his dependence.
Picture a house where lights flicker in three rooms and a tap drips in a fourth. You chase each fault separately for weeks. Then someone shows you the main fuse board, and every fault traces back to it. The verse promises that kind of knowing: not a longer list of facts, but the one source that explains the rest.
1. Pick one thing you know only because you were told it: how to make a simple dish, how to calm a restless child, how to breathe slowly when angry. 2. Today, actually do it, once, for ten minutes or so, without reading or asking anyone. 3. Notice what the doing taught you that the telling did not carry: a timing, a feel, a small mistake. 4. Tonight, say that difference aloud in one sentence.
A young mother sits up at three in the morning with a feverish baby. She has read leaflets and books for months and can recite every rule. Now her hands shake and the rules scatter. Krishna's promise of knowledge together with lived wisdom speaks to that moment. First she separates what she has been told from what she has seen: she has watched this baby breathe, feed and sleep, and that watching counts. Second, she does what the book says and notes what she sees now, the colour, the breathing, the response to a feed. Third, she rings the doctor or the helpline without shame, because the full picture includes knowing when to ask. Ordinary experience confirms the point that reading about swimming does not make anyone a swimmer. The verse does not promise that she will know every illness, or that the night will be easy, or that fear will vanish. Its promise, as Krishna gives it, concerns one kind of knowing, and it does not replace a doctor where one is needed.
