Bhagavad Gita 7.3
Meaning · English
Among thousands of men, hardly one strives for perfection. And among those who strive and have reached it, hardly one knows me in truth.
Krishna tells Arjuna how rare real knowing is. Three words carry it. Yatati means to strive, to make a sustained effort. Siddhi means perfection, a finished or accomplished state. Tattvatah means in truth, as the thing actually is, from the root tat, 'that', and tva, 'ness'. The plain sense: out of many thousands of people, one sets out to strive for perfection. Of those who strive, and even of those who have attained it, only one knows Krishna as he truly is. Krishna says this because he has just promised to reveal everything in full. The promise comes with a warning that knowing him is not the same as striving, or even succeeding, in some other aim. Effort and attainment are not the same as knowing him. It asks Arjuna to take the knowledge seriously and not assume he already holds it. The commentators differ on the word siddha. Shankara reads it as those who have gained purity of mind and are fit for knowledge, and the one who knows is the one who realizes the self as Brahman. Ramanuja reads the knowing as devoted knowledge of the Lord, reached through bhakti. Madhva stresses that such knowing is rare and comes through the Lord's grace.
Picture a huge crowd at the foot of a mountain, a few hundred starting to climb, and far up the slope a handful who have reached the ridge. Only one of them turns and looks at the mountain's real shape. The crowd is humanity, the climb is striving, the ridge is perfection, and the one who sees the whole shape is the person who knows Krishna in truth.
1. Tonight, take five minutes and write down one thing you are working hard at: a skill, a habit, a goal. 2. Beside it, write what you hope it will give you. Be honest and plain. 3. Ask whether reaching it would bring you closer to knowing what is real, or only to something comfortable. Write one sentence. 4. This week, give ten quiet minutes to that question once, without trying to answer it quickly.
A woman sits in a parked car outside her father's hospital ward, hands on the wheel, after months of being the one who handles everything. She has done every task well. Still she is not sure what any of it is for. The verse speaks to that moment. Krishna says that striving is already rare, and that even among those who succeed, knowing the truth of him is rarer still. Step by step: she can notice that effort and achievement have been her measure, and that the text separates them from knowing. She can stop treating her competence as proof that she has understood. She can let the question stay open, without forcing an answer, and go in to her father. Ordinary experience confirms that people can be busy and capable for years without ever asking what it is all for. The verse does not promise that the hospital will become easier, that her father will recover, or that grief will lessen. It names how uncommon deep knowing is, and it offers that as honest company, not as a cure.
