Eight Parts of Nature
Bhagavad Gita 7.4
Meaning · English
Earth, water, fire, air and space, mind, intellect, and ego: my material energy is divided into these eight parts.
Krishna gives Arjuna a list, and the list is the lesson. The word prakriti means nature, the stuff the world and the self are made from. Here it is split into eight. Five are the familiar elements: earth, water, fire, air and space. Three are inner: manas, buddhi and ahankara. Manas is the mind that receives impressions and wavers between them. Buddhi is the intellect that sorts and decides. Ahankara, literally the 'I-maker', is the sense of being a separate someone who owns all this. Krishna calls the whole set 'my' energy, so none of it stands apart from him. He also says it is divided, bhinna, meaning it has distinct parts that can be told apart. The reason for the list follows from the earlier promise to give complete knowledge. Before he can point to what lies beyond nature, he marks out what nature includes. The surprise is that mind, intellect and ego sit on the same list as earth and water. Thoughts and the sense of self are counted as part of nature, not as the seer. Shankara reads this as the lower nature that the knower must see beyond. Ramanuja reads it as the body of God, which depends on him entirely.
Think of a kitchen laid out before cooking: flour, water, a flame, a pot, and the cook's own hands and judgment. Everyone would call the flour and flame ingredients, but the verse also counts the cook's hands, choices and pride in the dish as part of the same supplies.
1. Tonight, sit for two minutes with a cup of water and a lit lamp or a window. Name the elements you see: water, fire, air, earth, space. 2. Then notice one thought arriving. Say quietly, 'mind, at work', as you would name a cloud. 3. Tomorrow, when you feel proud or stung, say 'ego, at work', and see whether a small gap opens before you reply.
A bus driver sits at the terminus after being shouted at by a passenger. His jaw is tight, his chest is hot, and his mind is already drafting replies. He feels all of it as one thing: me, wronged. The verse sets that moment out in parts. There is the body, made of the same earth, water, fire and air as the road outside. There is the mind, throwing up images and words. There is the intellect, weighing whether to complain. And there is the ego, insisting this was done to him. Seen as parts, the knot loosens a little. He can feel the heat in the chest as heat, hear the replies as mind's chatter, and choose one with intellect. Ordinary experience agrees that naming a feeling often softens its grip. The verse does not promise that the insult stops hurting, and it is no replacement for rest, food or a doctor when anger or low mood lingers. The map of eight is the tradition's own teaching, and it offers no medical claims.
