The Higher Energy: Living Beings

Bhagavad Gita 7.5

Meaning · English

This is my lower energy. Know that besides it I have another, higher energy, mighty-armed one: the living beings, by whom this material world is upheld.

Three words carry the verse. Apara is lower, from a, not, and para, beyond or higher. Para is that higher thing. Prakriti is nature or energy, from pra, forth, and kri, to make: what brings things forth. Jiva-bhuta is the living being, from jiv, to live. Krishna has just listed eight parts of his material energy: earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intellect and ego. He now tells Arjuna to know that this is his lower energy, and that he has another, higher one. That higher energy is the living beings, and the world is upheld by them. The list of eight takes in even mind and intellect, so the living being is not on it. Krishna is pointing to what sits behind mind and body. Arjuna is about to look at the field and see only bodies and armies, and Krishna starts by correcting that. Lower here means a lower rank in his own energy, not something worthless. The next verse says both energies are the womb of all beings. Shankara reads the living being as the knower in every body, which is Krishna's own nature. Ramanuja reads souls and matter as two real parts of God, with God as their inner ruler. Madhva reads the souls as eternally distinct from the Lord and wholly dependent on him.

A house stands shut for a year. The bricks and pipes are unchanged, yet damp creeps up the walls, the tap runs dry and the paint lifts. Once a family moves back in, it holds together again. The house is the lower energy. The family, who keep it standing, are the living beings.

1. Tonight, at one meal, look at the food and the table first. Name them quietly: grain, water, fire, plate. 2. Then look at the people eating with you, or think of one person, and notice that they are a different sort of thing from the table. 3. Tomorrow, on a short walk of ten minutes, pick one place, a shop or a street corner, and notice how much of it is kept going by the people in it, not the buildings. 4. Write one line on what you saw.

A woman opens her tea stall at five in the morning. She counts the milk, the gas cylinder and the day's rent, and for a moment the stall looks like a pile of costs. Then the first regular comes, and then the rest. The verse changes that moment in steps. It first lets her name the stove, the milk, the water and even her own tired mind as things of the lower energy, the kind that wear out and have to be bought. It then points to the one who does the tending, and to the people she serves. On this reading they are what hold the place up, not the kettle. So she counts the day by who came, as well as by what was spent. Ordinary experience agrees on one small point: a place with all its fittings and no people in it feels empty. The verse does not promise that the rent gets paid, that the stove stops breaking down, or that tiredness lifts. It names what sustains the world and leaves her bills as they were.
