Source and Dissolution

Bhagavad Gita 7.6

Meaning · English

Know that all living beings arise from these two energies. I am the source of the entire creation, and I am also where it dissolves.

Two words carry the weight. Yoni means a womb, a source from which something is born. Pralaya means dissolution, a melting back, from the sense of dissolving into. Krishna tells Arjuna that every living being has its birth in the two energies he has just described: the eightfold material nature and the higher living energy. He asks Arjuna to know this firmly, which is the sense of upadharaya, to take it in and hold it. Then he adds who stands behind both energies: he is the source of the whole creation, and he is also where it ends. So beginning and ending are both placed in him. The reason is Arjuna's grief and confusion. He is about to fight people he loves, and he sees only bodies that will fall. Krishna answers by widening the view: beings are not accidents, and their coming and going rests on one source. He asks Arjuna to see this before he acts. On the commentators: Shankara reads the two energies as powers resting in the one Brahman, who is the only real cause. Ramanuja reads them as the body of God, matter and souls, both belonging to him. Madhva stresses that God is the cause of all while remaining wholly distinct from what he creates.

A potter's wheel in a village workshop. The clay comes from the potter's heap, the pots take their shapes on his wheel, and a pot that cracks goes back into the same heap to be softened and used again. Beings are the pots, the two energies are the clay and the turning, and Krishna is the potter's whole work, beginning and end.

1. Tonight, pick one ordinary thing: a tea cup, a plant, a coin. Hold it for a minute and ask where it came from, and where it will go. 2. Trace it back three steps, out loud or on paper, and notice how far the chain runs. 3. Next time you feel a loss today, big or small, say quietly: this came from a source and returns to one. Notice whether your grip loosens even slightly.

A man stands at his father's hospital bed at night, watching the monitor, thinking only of the next hour. Every small change on the screen feels like the whole story. Krishna's words ask him to step back and see a longer frame: his father's life began somewhere and rests in something larger than this room. Step by step, the verse changes the moment. First, the man stops treating the ending as a private disaster, since the text says beginning and ending both sit in one source. Second, his attention can return to what is in front of him: holding a hand, speaking gently, asking the nurse a clear question. Third, grief has somewhere to rest besides panic. Ordinary experience confirms that a wider view often steadies a frightened person. The limit is plain. The verse does not remove grief, does not change a diagnosis, and does not replace the doctors who are caring for his father.
