Beads on One Thread

Bhagavad Gita 7.7

Meaning · English

There is nothing higher than Me, Arjun, conqueror of wealth. Everything we see is strung on Me, the way rows of beads are strung on a single thread.

Krishna uses two pictures, and the words carry them. Para-tara means higher, further along, more fundamental. Nothing stands above Him or behind Him as a deeper cause. Sutra is thread, and mani-gana is a cluster of beads. A bead has its own shape and colour, but a necklace exists only because a thread runs through every one. Krishna says the world of things is like that: each is distinct, and all are held on Him. He calls Arjun conqueror of wealth, a man used to counting what is his and what is not, and tells him the whole count rests on one support. The reason comes from the verses just before: if He is the source and the dissolving of everything, then nothing can rank above Him, and nothing can hang apart from Him. This is spoken to a man who feels the world splitting into enemies and kin. It asks him to look for what runs through all of it. Shankara reads the thread as the one highest cause on which the whole world rests. Ramanuja reads every being, conscious or not, as His body, held within Him. Madhva reads Him as wholly supreme and independent, with all else dependent on Him.

A bicycle wheel has dozens of spokes, each a separate rod pointing a different way. They stay in place only because every one is fixed to the hub at the centre. Take the hub away and the spokes are loose metal. The many things of the world are the spokes, and Krishna is the hub that holds them.

1. Tonight, pick three ordinary objects near you: a cup, a chair, a window. Look at each for about half a minute. 2. For each one, ask quietly what it rests on, then what that rests on, until you run out of answers. 3. Tomorrow, when someone irritates you, pause for one breath and remember that they hang on the same support you do. 4. Notice whether the irritation loosens even slightly. If it does not, that is fine.

A man sits in a hospital corridor at night while his father is in surgery. Everything has split into pieces: the clock, the humming vending machine, a nurse's footsteps, his own racing thoughts. Each one seems separate and indifferent to him. Fear narrows attention like that, and the world feels scattered. Krishna's teaching gives him one step: to take what he sees as held on a single support, not a pile of unconnected things. Then the nurse, the clock and the corridor are not his enemies. They are beads on the same string as his father and himself. He may find his breathing slows, and he may feel less alone in the room. The teaching asks him only to look at the whole differently. It does not say the surgery will go well, and it does not take away fear or grief. It does not replace the surgeon, or the family and friends who can sit beside him. What it offers is a steadier way to wait.
