The Essence Within Things

Bhagavad Gita 7.8

Meaning · English

I am the taste in water, son of Kunti, the radiance of the moon and the sun, the sacred syllable Om in all the Vedas, the sound in ether, and the ability in human beings.

Krishna gives Arjuna five places to look for him, and each one is the inner quality of something, not the thing itself. Rasa is taste, the quality that makes water what it is to the tongue. Prabha is radiance, the shining of moon and sun, not the discs in the sky. Pranava is Om, the syllable the Vedas open and close with and that runs through all of them. Shabda is sound, the quality of ether, the open space it travels through. Paurusha is ability, the capacity in a person to do and to attempt. The reason comes from the verses before it. Krishna has just told Arjuna that all things are strung on him and that nothing is higher. A claim that large is hard to hold, so he makes it ordinary: the essence in water, light, speech and effort is where he says he can be met. Arjuna is invited to see the thing and also what makes it itself. Shankara reads these as the Lord being the inner essence by which each thing is known. Ramanuja reads them as all things having God as their inner self. Madhva reads them as God dwelling in each thing as its ruler and giver of quality, still distinct from it.

Stir a spoon of sugar into tea and the sugar disappears. You cannot point to it, yet every sip is sweet. The sweetness is in all of the tea, though none of it can be seen. Krishna says he is present in water, light, sound and human effort in that way: the quality in each thing, not one more object beside it.

1. At your next meal, drink one glass of water slowly. Take three sips and notice only the taste, or the lack of it, and the cool. 2. Step outside in daylight today for two minutes. Look at the brightness on a wall or a leaf, not at the sun. 3. Sit quietly for one minute and listen to the sound between noises: the hum of the room, the space around a voice. 4. Before you begin a task you have been avoiding, notice that you are able to begin it, and then begin.

A retired bus conductor, weak on one side since a stroke, stands at the kitchen window at dawn. He is learning again to lift a steel tumbler of water with his left hand. The verse would turn his attention in small steps. First the water: the cold on his lip and the plain taste that is hardly a taste. Then the light coming over the roofs, which he did not make and cannot hurry. Then the scrape of the tumbler on the sill, a sound in open air. Last, the effort itself, the fact that the hand rises at all. In the text's teaching, Krishna is present in each of these as its essence, so the morning is more than a chore to get through. Ordinary experience bears out one small point: when attention rests on a plain thing for a few breaths, hurry loosens. The old word for ether has no match in today's physics, and the verse is not a physical account of sound. It does not restore the hand, replace therapy or medicine, or lift his grief for the work he used to do.
