The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 7 · The Thread Through Everything

God in Everything's Essence

Bhagavad Gita 7.9

Meaning · English

I am the pure fragrance of the earth and the brilliance in fire. I am the life-force in all beings, and I am the penance of those who practise austerity.

Krishna goes on naming where he can be found, and each item is the quality that makes a thing what it is. Gandha is fragrance, and he calls it punya, pure, meaning clean and unspoiled, like the smell of earth itself. Tejas is brilliance, the heat and light that make fire fire. Jivana is the life-force, what keeps a being alive and distinguishes it from a corpse. Tapas is penance, the heat of discipline that an ascetic keeps burning on purpose. The verse covers earth, fire, every living creature and the person who gives things up for a higher aim. Krishna gives the examples because Arjuna has just been told that everything hangs on him like beads on a thread, and a thread is hard to see. Here he points to the places where it can be seen: the smell after rain, a flame, one's own breath, a person's steady vow. He asks Arjuna to look at the essence of things and recognise its source. Shankara reads these as the Lord being the inner essence of each thing. Ramanuja reads them as all things having God as their inner self, so every quality belongs to him. Madhva reads them as showing that every quality depends entirely on God.

Sugar stirred into tea cannot be seen, yet every sip is sweet. Nobody tastes the sugar as a lump; they taste sweetness everywhere in the cup. Krishna describes himself the same way: unseen as a separate thing, but present as the fragrance, the heat, the aliveness and the discipline in what we meet.

1. Tomorrow morning, spend one minute at an open window or doorstep and notice one smell of the earth: soil, grass, dust, rain. 2. When you light a stove, lamp or match this week, watch the flame for ten slow breaths before you use it. 3. Once today, feel your own breath for three breaths and remember that Krishna calls this life-force his. 4. In the evening, think of one person you know who keeps a hard discipline quietly, and silently honour it.

A woman walks out of a hospital after hours of waiting for a scan result for her husband. Rain begins to fall on the dry car park, and the smell of wet earth rises. Most people know that smell and are stopped by it for a moment. Ordinary experience confirms that a strong scent can pull the mind off its worry and into the present. The verse gives that moment a meaning. Krishna tells Arjuna that this purity of earth's fragrance is his own. She stops, takes three breaths of it, and the waiting stops being only fear. Her breath, the smell and the light of the car park's lamps become places where the text says he is present. She goes back inside steadier, and still uncertain. The verse does not change the result of the scan, remove her fear or replace the doctor's advice. It gives her something real to stand on while she waits.
