Seed, Intellect, Splendor

Bhagavad Gita 7.10

Meaning · English

Know me, Arjuna, as the eternal seed of all beings. I am the intellect of the intelligent, and the splendor of the splendid.

Three words carry the verse. Bija means seed, the first source from which something grows. Buddhi is the faculty that weighs, sorts and decides, what we call intellect. Tejas is brilliance, the glow that makes a person or a thing stand out. Krishna tells Arjuna that he is the seed of every living being, and that he is sanatana, ever-lasting, with no beginning that can be pointed to. Then he narrows from all beings to the gifted ones: he is the intellect in those who think well, and the splendor in those who shine. The reason he gives is the point of the whole chapter. Arjuna is looking at armies of strong, clever, famous men and seeing only separate people. Krishna says the cleverness and the brilliance they carry are not self-made. They trace back to him. It asks Arjuna to look at a sharp mind or a radiant presence and see where it comes from, not only who owns it. Shankara reads the seed as the cause of all beings, and sanatana as lasting where an ordinary seed is spent in growing. Ramanuja reads it as Krishna being the source of all beings, who are his body. Madhva reads it as Krishna being the independent source on whom all else depends.

A mango stone sits on the kitchen counter after the fruit is eaten. It holds a whole tree, leaves and next summer's mangoes, though none of that shows. Every sweet fruit that ever hangs there began in it. Krishna is the stone, and a keen mind or a bright presence is the fruit.

1. Tonight, think of one person whose mind you admire, a teacher, a cook, a mechanic. Spend one minute on what exactly is sharp in them. 2. Tell them, in a sentence, what you noticed. Say it plainly, without flattery. 3. When someone praises your own good idea this week, pause for a breath before answering. Notice the urge to claim it, and thank them for noticing.

A schoolteacher stands at the board after class, and a girl who struggled for weeks finally sees how a fraction splits. Her face lights up. The teacher feels a rush of pride and a small wish to be thanked. Krishna's teaching, said as his teaching, changes the next minute in steps. First, the teacher sees the girl's sharp mind as something received, not manufactured by the lesson. Second, the pride settles into respect, for the girl and for whatever lit her understanding. Third, the teacher praises the girl's own effort and goes on teaching without needing to be the source. Ordinary experience also confirms that a tired, hungry mind learns badly and a rested one learns more easily, so care for sleep and food belongs beside gratitude for the mind itself. The limit is plain. The verse does not make the girl pass her exam, does not make the next lesson easier, and does not take away the teacher's weariness. It changes how the gift is held, not how much work the gift needs.
