Strength Without Craving
Bhagavad Gita 7.11
Meaning · English
Of the strong, I am the strength that is free of craving and passion. In all beings I am the desire to procreate that does not conflict with dharma, best of the Bharats.
Four words carry it. Bala is strength: the power to bear a load and to endure. Kama is desire, plain wanting. Raga is passion, the pull that clings to what it wants and will not let go. Dharma is right order, whatever holds a life and a world together. Krishna tells Arjuna that in the strong he is their strength, but strength with the craving taken out: the power to carry, not the hunger to dominate. Then he says that in all beings he is desire, but only the desire that does not run against dharma, the wanting that keeps life going, such as hunger, thirst and the wish for family. He says this because the whole passage traces what is best in each thing back to him. Strength and wanting are what a warrior knows most closely, so he names them and draws the line. Both are good when clean. The listener is asked to tell clean wanting from clinging. Shankara reads the desire as the need to maintain the body, such as food, within what scripture allows. Ramanuja takes both as belonging to beings who rest in God as their inner self. Madhva stresses that both are God's gift and stay under his rule.
A clay stove in a kitchen holds a steady fire. It heats the pot and feeds the household. The same flame loose on a curtain burns the house down. Desire kept within dharma is the stove fire, and the strength in the verse is the banked heat that stays useful because it has walls.
1. At your next meal, eat slowly and notice when the hunger is met. Stop there, or one bite later. 2. Once today, when you catch yourself wanting something, ask whether it is a need or a grasp. Wait one minute before acting and note what changes. 3. The next time you lift, carry or speak firmly, notice whether the effort serves someone or only wins something for you.
A woman has fasted all day and now stands at a wedding buffet, tired and hungry. The first plate is simply need. By the third plate of sweets she is no longer hungry, only reaching. The verse would slow this in steps. First, she names the hunger as real and answers it without guilt. Second, she notices the moment the need is met and the reaching begins. Third, she sets down the plate and turns to the people at the table. In Krishna's teaching, the wanting that sustains a body and a household is his presence in beings, and the clinging that runs past it is something else. Ordinary experience agrees that hunger and appetite are the body's signals for staying alive, and that tiredness makes it harder to stop. The verse does not promise that wanting will go quiet, or that restraint will feel easy at the end of a long day. It does not replace a doctor for anyone whose appetite or desire has become a medical or emotional trouble.
