Meaning · English
Praised, he is not pleased. Blamed, he is not angry. He does not shrink at death, nor welcome life. His mind is still: he does not run toward a crowded place, nor toward the forest. Wherever he is, however things stand, he remains the same, level and unmoved.
Three key words carry the verse. Upashanta-dhi means a mind that has come to rest: upa-sham, to settle down, and dhi, the mind that understands. Sama means level, even, the same on every side. Avatishthate means to stay standing where one is. The verse lists pairs. Praise and blame leave the knower neither glad nor angry. Death does not make him flinch, and life does not make him cheer. A crowd does not draw him, and a forest does not draw him either. Ashtavakra says he stays level wherever he is and however things fall. The last pair matters most. The forest was the usual place for a person seeking peace to go, so the verse tells Janaka that peace does not depend on going there. Nor does it depend on avoiding company. Ashtavakra teaches here because Janaka asked how the freed one lives. The answer is that nothing outside gives or takes the rest, since the self he knows is only witness and is untouched by what is said of him or done to him. What the verse asks of a listener is to look for a steadiness that does not need the right setting.
A stone set in a stream stays where it is whether the water runs high and loud after rain or thin and quiet in summer. The stone is the knower. The water, in flood or in trickle, is praise, blame, company, solitude and the turns of life.
1. Today, notice one moment of praise or of criticism, however small, and before you answer, take three slow breaths. 2. In that pause, name what rose in you: pleased, stung, or nothing. 3. Spend ten minutes in a crowded place and ten minutes alone, and see whether your mood changes between them. 4. Do not try to fix anything you notice. Only see it.
A shopkeeper opens his shutter on the morning the rent is due. A regular customer praises his tea, then another complains it is cold. His chest lifts, then tightens, and by noon the day has been pushed around by two sentences. The verse would change this step by step. He would notice the lift and the tightening as they happen. He would answer the complaint plainly and take the praise without clinging to it. Neither would decide how he felt about the rent. Ordinary experience agrees that a person who is not hunting for approval hears criticism more clearly and uses it better. The text teaches something deeper than a habit, though: that the knower never was moved by these things, because the self is the witness. The verse does not promise that the rent will be paid, that grief at a death will be absent, or that a doctor is unneeded when someone is ill. It describes a steadiness underneath those events, not a way to prevent them.
