Nothing Left to Do

In scattering he is not scattered, in deep absorption not absorbed. In dullness he is not dull, in learning not learned. The freed one stands at ease in things as they stand, finished with what was to be done. Level everywhere, free of thirst, he does not recall what was done and what was left undone.
Three words carry the verse. Vikshepa is scattering, from a root meaning to throw apart: the mind flung in many directions. Samadhi is absorption, a putting together: the mind gathered into one. Trishna is thirst, the dry pull toward more. Ashtavakra says the freed person is touched by none of these. When the mind scatters, he is not scattered. When it gathers deeply, he does not become the gathered state. The same holds for dullness and for learning: he is neither the fool nor the scholar, though either may show on the surface. The text's point is that the self is the witness of all these states and is never made of them. Then he says the freed one rests in things as they stand, and the work of becoming is finished. Because thirst is gone, he is level toward everything. Because he is level, he does not keep a ledger of deeds done and undone. Janaka had asked how freedom is won. This is part of the answer: there is no state to achieve or protect, since the witness was never lost in any state. For the listener, it loosens the worry over whether the mind is calm enough, focused enough or learned enough.
A ceiling fan runs on high. The blades blur and the air churns, yet the hub at the centre does not turn from its place. States of mind are the blades, busy, fast or slow. What Ashtavakra points to is the hub, which holds every blade and is not carried round by any.
1. Once today, when your mind is scattered, say quietly, 'Scattered is happening,' and keep doing the task for two minutes. 2. Once today, when you feel dull or slow, say the same about dullness and notice who is noticing. 3. At night, before sleep, do not tally what you finished and what you left. Let the list stay unread for five minutes.
A retired teacher lies awake in the quiet house after her niece's wedding. The guests have gone. She replays the evening: the speech she forgot, the cousin she did not greet, the tasks she thinks she left half done. Her mind jumps from one to the next, and she judges herself for being unable to settle. The verse would change this in small steps. The scattered thoughts are seen as scattering, not as a verdict on her. The wish for a calm, tidy mind is seen as one more thirst. The tally of done and undone is set down unread. What remains is the one who is watching all this, who the text says was not scattered at all. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind chasing its own performance sleeps worse than one that stops grading itself. The limit is plain: the verse does not promise sleep, remove regret, or replace a doctor if the sleeplessness lasts for weeks. It describes what Ashtavakra says the freed person rests in, not a method for a single night.
